Absolutely amazed with the quality of my new D610 + Tamron 24-70 f2.8. This is just a couple of quick shots I took of my son yesterday after he had his face painted in nursery. Really looking forward to getting to know this camera in more detail and get out and about to take more pics.

He's a very happy chappie!
I'd say you needed a faster shutter speed though as neither look particularly sharp. :exit:

Thanks for the feedback - and yes, you're probably right. Had the mode on aperture priority but given the fact he was running around the garden, would've been better off using shutter priority or manual. Could you however please help me and define 'sharp'? Looking at these images on my MacBook with Retina screen, the images look very sharp - do you mean that by using a faster shutter speed, I could have reduced any blur and hence had a sharper image??

I viewed them on flickr and the eyes seem a tad soft. The second image is better with regards to the sharpness but both images have nice tones and colours.

A faster shutter would help to eliminate any slight motion blur from your lad or your hands... nothing wrong with aperture priority, I use it alot and you have a very nice tool to achieve it with as you could bump the iso to 400/800 without a care in the world. This higher iso coupled with the excellent VC from Tamron would give a much sharper image. You could also stop the aperture down a touch too as alot of lenses produce sharper shots with a couple of stops dialed in from wide open. I'm a big lover of shallow depth of field so I often balls shots up with soft edges to the face so I speak from experience. Lol.

Thanks, that's great feedback. Must say, the 610 being my first FX camera, I keep forgetting that I can crank up the ISO without introducing noise in the image! Out and about tomorrow so will try this.

I'm assuming the D610 has auto ISO as a feature? A handy feature as it uses it's lowest ISO setting but will bump it up automatically if needed (up to a pre-determined limit), within in the same setting you set your slowest shutter speed so you don't have to worry too much about a slow shutter either :) It doesn't work out for everybody but I find it nice to have, especially as noise isn't necessarily going to be a problem on your D610 :)

They are not sharp. Viewing the full sized images on flickr shows a shutter speed on 1/50th. With the D610 you could happily knock the iso up several stops and get a quicker shutter speed. From their you can determine whether or not the lens is focussing correctly.

I'd turn the VC off too. It's useful for still subjects, but can introduce issues in moving subjects. Also it'll be useless as the shutter speed increases.

auto iso is quite handy when using auto exposure modes such as aperture priority - you can even set the lowest shutter speed before it bumps up the iso

Auto ISO Setting - of course. Thank, so many features to learn. Think I need to familiarise myself with all the settings and features but I guess learning my doing is the best method.

Thanks.

Interesting - thanks, I'll try that.

You're welcome, look forward to seeing your pics! :)

Suspect I'll posting some more in the coming weeks - especially as we're looking at a trip to Rome in May 1/2 term :)

I recommend you read the manual from back to front :)

What I really don't like about the shot is the on camera flash. No shadows, no depth.

Don't think there is any flash in there. The subject is looking upwards towards the sky, which is probably why he looks a bit more flashed.

Great shots by the way!

Sorry, but I still don't like the head on lighting. To me it looked like on camera flash.
