On Saturday I have about 5 or 6 hours in the Leeds area after I drop the missus off for her University tutorial.
I wonder if anyone has any ideas of places to go with the camera, free or very cheap.
I really don;t know the area well at all.

I will have the car, so travel is ok within reason - no point driving for hours for a few minutes shooting. :)

The parkinson building at the University would be a good start. you could go to Kirkstall Abbey, Golden Acre park and Roundhay Park, Clarence Dock, the canal and granary Wharf are nice areas as well. They are all free and you could easily do all of those in 5-6 hours.

Corn exchange for interesting architecture, also trinity centre ceiling is interesting. If weather is pants. That said kirkstall abbey would be good.

Great, thanks.

I have been to Roundhay.
Clarence dock is near the Armouries, isn't it? I went to the Armouries last time I was there...I did wonder about trying some shots in and around that area...the architectural and town stuff is something I am not so good at, so practise would be good.
I do have to get a couple of decent "atmospheric" landscapes sometime soon, but agian, not my strong point. Maybe one or two of the parks would give opportunity for that. :)

Like the idea of the Corn Exchange, but would love a wide angle for that, which I don;t have.
Will check out the Abbey. :)

Cheers

Corn exchange is really is nice there's also a second hand camera shop on the balconies there. Just have a wander around there's some fantastic architecture. There's the Victorian shopping arcades (Victoria Quarter) and over the road Kirkgate Market (if the smell of fish doesn't put you off) where Marks and Spencer started.

Thank you...Would probably be annoyed at the camera shop, since I am broke. ( :( )

Thanks for the other suggestions. I will check them out. :)

Not sure if you're allowed to go in and photograph it, but the back entrance of the infirmary (LGI) is pretty good, on Great George St. Gilbert Scott was the architect (did buildings around St Pancras amongst others).

I'll try to find a kinky to show what I mean

Edit: obviously that should say linky!

Park in Woodhouse Lane car park, near the uni (£5 all day http://www.leeds.gov.uk/residents/P...nd-visitors-car-park-at-Woodhouse-Lane--.aspx) and set off on foot.

Near there, you have the Uni, Broadcasting Tower, the new Leeds Arena, Millennium Square, (look out for the gold owls) Leeds City Museum (free entry and good shelter spot especially if it's raining). Then head down to Granary Wharfe and Cavendish Dock, back through the Calls to the Victoria Quarter and Leeds Markets and back to the car!

Loads of interesting architectural details so recommend taking a zoom and look up too

Yes, I know Woodhouse Lane car park. I'll have a look at your route on the map...:)
Cheers

Highly recommend the Corn Exchange, also, if you are along that way there is a little lane/street called 'The Bourse' the building in there makes a great abstract photo as the front is mirrored and gives a great reflection of the church behind, see here. Area around The Armouries is also good. There is also Broadcasting House (big rusty looking building), near the University which is very photogenic. The arcades and alleyways in the city centre are good for a wander around.

Just had another thought, you could drive out to Temple Newsam as there is a bit there to keep you occupied and it's not too far (15 minute drive) from the city centre. I have just been there this morning and the woods are covered in a carpet of bluebells at the moment. There is a small farm there you can go around and a Jacobean House.
