Just in case you hadn't seen YN622C-TX released.

It arrived yesterday! No duty to pay which I feel odd about, but made it a real bargain.
I need to go through the new TOYUG to see what it'll control on my flashes.

And when I've got time to play I'll adjust the SS timing for the Safari.

Still waiting for mine. Ordered sunday, so hopefully should be here soon. Lets us know your thought about it Phil

Sorry for the numpty question...

I currently have the yongnuo RF602s.

Would I need to order new receivers for the flash units or will they work with the new controller unit?

It won't work with the 602's, whether or not it's worth buying a set of 622s depends on your flash guns.

Thanks Phil

^^ in what way?

I am hoping to get a set of Lencarta Smartflashes but they don't have the Lencarta remote triggers with them as the seller is wanting to keep them.

Thanks Phil

The 622s are ETTL triggers, and so enable control of ETTL flash guns, they will also fire any manual only flash guns or studio flash.

So they're a waste of money if you're only firing manual flash guns or studio flash (602s will do the job cheaper). They're an absolute bargain if you can use them to their full potential with ETTL guns or to use the tx to trigger portable studio flash.

Although you can probably go to faster sync speeds?

I mentioned portable studio flash for that reason, faster sync speeds are important outside but less useful in the studio.

Couldn't you use it for shallow DOF eg f1.4-f2.5 ish?
Yes.
But studio 'habits' are the opposite of what we tend to do outside the studio. I'm guessing it's because of studio BG's so we live with massive DoF because the background isn't interfering with the composition.

It'd be interesting to hear if any of the studio shooters regularly use shallow DoF inside the studio.

I had a quick go a few weeks ago but on a moving child target. F2.8 - lighting was ok, subject a bit OOF!

Wouldn't use it all the time, but good for variety/creative purposes.

My plan is to run a test of the Safari in bright sun:
  • With no extra 'tricks'
  • With a ND filter to open the aperture
  • With the YN622tx to open the aperture

But I've no idea when I'll have time, I'm up to my eyeballs ATM. :(

DITTO. Want to use the 85 f1.4 with the tx

Off to bed soon -had a night of injecting magic juice!

I found 1.1ms got the best balance on the Safari II (on my Nikon version) just a hint of the rear curtain and an acceptable amount of fall off in the other direction. As long as the shot is not too biased towards flash, this will produce usable results at higher shutter speeds. The auto mode works well too. Instead of sticking the trigger in SS mode for that light group, just stick it in Manual and it automatically kicks in "supersync" when you go over the x-sync speed. This is on the Nikon version though - due to the down and dirty nature of how these triggers work with the camera, you may get different results on Canon bodies.

One good thing about doing this on the Safari, is that you can still use the WaveSync transmitter to turn light output up and down.

For people who ordered from HK, how long did you have to wait before you received it?

Does anyone know if this will allow the remote power function on the 560 mk 3, which isn't an ettl flash but has the yn built in wireless receiver and was rumoured to have remote power control coming - is this it?

ding76uk - The 430EX Manual output levels can be controlled using the 622C-TX, by setting custom function 05 - EX Compatibility. (p.45 of TOYUG).

landwomble - the 622C and 622C-TX cannot control the 560 III, but the YN560-TX can control outputs using the 622C-TX as a repeater. Version 1.02 or later is required. See TOYUG v4.06, p.46.

Phil - are you using a 550EX and say a 580EXII in the one group? I have a note to test that configuration. (I have 3x 550EX).

I expect that to not work, as the group would then need to process the Canon code for remote Manual outputs and pseudo-E-TTL code simultaneously. It may work for two different single-function groups.

50D + C-TX / 622C (Gp A) + 550EX / 622C (Gp B) + 580EX II
Able to vary intensity as expected, according to visual inspection of images (not metering).

Same config, but both 622C in Gp A.
Same results.

The 550EX was tested alone first to ensure that there was no factor other than a second unit.

BTW - you did set the 550EX on-flash to E-TTL I hope.

I'll have another go later today. I expected it to work as you suggest, but it didn't appear to.

This is the remote controller for YN 560iii guns http://flashhavoc.com/yongnuo-yn560-tx-now-available/

There are so many different triggers and stuff coming out now, it's getting very confusing. Sorry if this makes things worse!

I'm liking the look of the new Cactus V6 triggers, for auto-TTL on-camera via pass-through, plus manual power control of remote guns. Thinking about how I actually work, that covers it - same for a lot of other folks too, I think. Plus it works with pretty much any auto-TTL enabled gun on any camera (including my older 580EX guns that work superbly, don't want to sell, but don't have the EX-II gubbins inside). You can even mix different brands of flash gun together.

i currently have 4 of the 622c's which i use for manual and ettl. I like that fact that i can mount a flash on top of one of those. Is the only benefit of getting one of these TX units being able to change power and levels of my flashes without having to keep going into the canon menu? Or am i missing something?

Yes, that's the chief benefit, although there are a couple of other side benefits with older guns and older cameras and supersync timings.

But as for it's primary aim, the Canon menu system for the flash is dire, working at speed is impossible, the menu on the TX unit is a huge improvement.

Many thanks for the quick answer Phil. Out of interest, am I able to use this TX unit with an on camera flash somehow?

Available at calumet too. Not as good as yn though, unfortunately.

I've just ordered one of these for exactly that reason
