Colour space, lightroom output and printing - a question

In case you didn't see my earlier thread, I recently had a bunch of images printed that came back dull and muddy from a printer I've had good success with before. Something I noticed after comparing images uploaded to his website with images stored locally was that the images as shown on the website were also dull and muddy compared to the local image in a browser window. The images had been saved before upload as 100% jpg files in sRGB colour space. I have subsequently found that saving the images in the Adobe RGB colour space and uploading them gives a much closer appearance to the same file viewed locally. The issue is therefore not equipment calibration because both dull and clear images are being viewed on the same monitor aqt the same time.

2 questions arise from this:
1) is this behaviour due to exporting the files from Lightroom in Windows rather than Lightroom in OSX (is the colourspace information embedded differently)?
2) is there a way of getting reliable image behaviour which ever colour space is used?

I'm developing using a Dell U2412M monitor i.e. it doesn't have an extended colour space, so that should not affect how the image is displayed.

Any help gratefully received.
