Beginner Thought would try some bird shots

Decided i would try something different and out of my comfort zone so went down to local nature reserve armed with the camera and tri pod and head for the bird hides.
Managed to get these 4 shots.(Had a lot more but wasnt happy with them)

Now i am after some advice on this shot as the heron isnt very sharp when you look closely is this due to the shutter speed as i wouldnt of said it was flying fast! The expert eye will be able to tell from the image below im sure but kept it as i like it and wanted to learn more from it.

Did enjoy my hour down sat in the hide and found it very relaxing.

Always welcome critique on all my pictures.
 
In theory 1/320 sec on a 300mm lens should be okay but if you are not used to BIF a faster shutter speed might be needed - however this looks more than just shutter speed from the original image ... looks like you plain missed focus on this one :)
 
Yeah i had it on AI Focuse and not Al Servo as wasnt expecting the BIF as was taking a picture of a swan in the water but caught that coming out of corner of my eye. Will get back down next time i am free and just keep giving it a go.
