Hi All,
Looking at getting myself a longer lens for shooting some sport football, and Rugby mainly, but will come in handy at some of my music gigs when shooting from the sound board. currently have a nikon 70-200 on a D3S which just hasn't got the reach i want so have been looking for a 300mm. been offer this one Nikon 300mm f2.8 AF IF ED Lens I know that this is an older lens but probably more in my price range, has anyone on here use this lens and can recommend it? just missed out on a sigma 120-300 any other recommendations welcomed

Thanks

Craig

Speaking from experience i would avoid any of the bigger heavier Nikon lenses with the aperture ring and go for the "G" lenses, you can have no end of trouble with the ring becoming loose and missing contact with the camera if you frequently turn the camera from Landscape to Portrait mode it can put some real stress on the camera and lens, especially if the tripod ring/mount is a little stiff. all that stress can actually bend the aperture lever inside the camera mount.

If you do go for non G lens make 100% sure theres zero movement between the aperture ring and the rest of the lens or you'll be in for a boat load of trouble and expense.

Thanks for the heads up mate, Didn't know this happened to the older D lenses!

The AF-S 300mm f2.8 VR is a really good lens - but is 300mm + FX Body long enough for what you want?

The Nikon can take their TC20Elll and if you have a DX body you are up to 900mm at f5.6 ……… I use this combo quite a lot and I find that it works well

You would not want to use even the AF-S 300mm f2.8VR hand held for very long and so a tripod or at least a very good monopod (and head), would be advisable …… the (gimbal type) Manfrotto 393 is really good value for money

AF is very good on the AF-S lens and the optics in the later lens are better ……… AF on the AF IF lens will be slower ……. OK for some subjects but not, I would have thought, for sports

I should be alright then as I don't turn the lens portrait at all to be honest, Just bought a mint Nikon AF-S 400mm f/2.8D IF-ED II so you got me worried for a minute there ;)
I had that one, had the aperture ring replaced twice and lens mount twice and aperture lever on camera as well, if using on a monopod/tripod make sure the the lens can rotate very freely within the tripod ring

I use one and think its great. used on a crop body so it gives some extra reach . if I was to go FX on the longer lens I would want to go something 400mm however
