I'm looking for some recommendations for lenses to for a trip I'm making in a few months to Australia.

I'll be taking my Canon 40D and currently only have an EFS 18-55 with IS.

Any thoughts as to a couple of lenses (Canon or otherwise) to augment this would be appreciated.

I'm not on a really tight budget but also don't want to spend over the odds.

Thoughts appreciated.

Personally I think that 18-55mm is a good range and "all" you're missing is...

- Very wide angle, 10-18mm.
- Longer zoom, 55-200/300.
- Macro.
- Wide aperture.

I don't take a lot of pictures at the longer focal lengths and you can go too wide :D so 18-55mm would be a good enough all round lens for me and all that's left is macro and wide aperture. The 18-55mm can't do macro but I'd shoot for best effect and crop and so that just leaves wide aperture for lower light hand held shooting so...

I'd be happy with the 18-55mm and a wide aperture prime, 28/35mm f1.4/1.8 :D

Well it all depends what you like to shoot - at the very least I'd say some sort of 70-300 or 55-200 (or equivalent Canon lenses) which you'd be able to great pretty reasonably price wise. Least you have a choice from pretty wide to pretty long. My GF and I are seriously thinking of a holiday to Australia, I think I would limit myself to three lenses for a holiday to somewhere like that (I would normally limit myself to 2 for a European city break :) ), if & when we go then I'd be taking my D610 with a 16-35, 50 and 70-200 I think.

i would go with 70-200 look at the f4 version its a lot lighter. depends on what you take may be thats all you will need

Was originally thinking about a 50mm 1.4 and then something longer. I have a 40-150mm for my Olympus and always thought of getting an equivalent for the Canon.

Also I spent a weekend in Brugge recently and couldn't get anywhere wide enough to photo what my eye could see so I could see the benefit of going wide.

So if money wasn't stopping me how would:

50mm 1.4
10-18mm wide
70-200mm

look?

Also canon or other brand?

Earlier this year I took a 10-20mm, 15-85mm, 70-200 f/2.8, 1.4x, 2.0x. The 15-85mm got the most use, terrific lens.

Also took a CPL, 10-stop ND and a Redged compact tripod.

On a tighter budget, a 55-250mm would compliment your 18-55mm and as already mentioned a 10-20mm (Sigma) or 10-22 (Canon) would be useful too..

Enjoy your trip...

In line with most of the suggestions;
Your standard zoom will be fine for a lot of shots, and it will be ok for "close ups"
An ultrawide zoom, will be handy as would a medium tele zoom (say out to 300mm).

This will cover most things, unless you want to shoot wildlife in the wild, and then you wil want real long.

I live in Australia (Sydney)

When I went I took a 17-70mm a 70-210mm and a 50mm on a 30d which covered everything.

In your boat I'd look to trade the kit lens either for a 15-85mm, if your going to be restricted to the 17-55 range it needs to be an f2.8 to justify it add a lightweight telephoto and a 35mm prime.
