MPB Photographic

I have bought from MPB a few times - notably a 500 f4 L, and an 800 f5.6 L, no problems except one of the lenses i bought had a small speck of dust inside the lens which was NOT mentioned on the description ... does not affect the optics at all but pretty annoyed it was not mentioned on the site and I am pretty OCD when it comes to keeping my lenses and gear in top nick, etc.

Sadly, it strikes me as one of those businesses which was great when it started up as a small outfit, but the bigger they get, the worse they get, i think. Seems to mirror a few people's experiences...

I suppose many businesses sometimes aren't quite as personal as they grow & get busier, but tbh I've not heard of many issues, certainly un resolved ones, with MPB.

"had a small speck of dust inside the lens which was NOT mentioned on the description" Maybe IT should have been spotted, but, if it was a pre-owned/used item, surely the odd speck is to be expected? (& was it worth mentioning?)

I had a few of dealings with mpb. They are nice and friendly. I part ex a lens at decent price. But when I wanted to offload my DX lenses the second time their part ex prices went a lot lower than I expected. So I held it off. Finally I went for the decision of going fx, then the same lens was quoted nearing £120 less. I asked them how come the massive difference being a month apart never actually got a reply back other than the standard "MPB is UK's leading online camera retailer and we ensure our quoted prices are competitive...". Same message I got a month before word for word. So made me think maybe they aren't as personal as they first appeared to be. Although there was no fault in part ex service. I ended up going else where for part ex as they were paying me £200 extra and had the lens I want at the best price too.

Hi Richard, out of interest who gave you a better quote?

Bought stuff from them and always good service, selling/ px my equipment on the other hand totally different experience on both occasions they booked the courier to pick up my gear and the courier never turned up, very annoying considering I spent both days off work and waiting in. Bit of a disgrace really.

Sold them a camera last week and all went very well. I had a email on the agreed day of collection regarding the time of pick up, in my case between 3-4pm. the courier arrived 3.15pm. This was my only transaction with MPB, but I would be more than happy to use them again.

Have used MPB a few times with no problems at all but my most recent dealing (sold them a Sigma 100-300mm f4) wasn't quite such easy going. Saying that, as soon as they realised it was their mistake they immediately sorted out the problem in a thoroughly professional manner and all was well.

On that basis I would recommend them to anyone.

I am just going through selling to MPB for the first time. (The lenses have just been collected but I have not been paid yet.l) The experience seems very good so far. I got them to quote on a few items I had but decided to only sell them two lenses.

Given that they are a business and have to make a profit on the re-sale and cover the potential risk of a second hand product becoming faulty then I think that the prices that they quote are very reasonable. Obviously, if you sell privately on forums such as this one or AVFourums then you will get much more money.

I assume that the prices they pay for the same item will vary considerably. For example, if they already have a dozen copies of a lens that you want to sell them then I would expect them to offer you a much lower price than they did to the first people to sell them that lens. There may be big variations throughout the year as well. At busier times they probably want top keep more stock.

Just got my email from MPB Photographic confirming that the lenses met their Mint- requirements so I am a happy bunny. I was concerned that they might find some minor mark and say that the lenses were not mint. MPB seem like an excellent option for selling my used photo gear. I wonder if they want my Sony RX10? (I dont use it since I got an A6000)

After four perfect purchases/trades My last our nurse went wrong but has been sorted.

On the 19th I bought a sigma 300 for what I thought was a bargain price, that weekend I took to the super bikes and after 500 shots the viewfinder went grainy and the lens wouldn't focus, after an hour of trying to get it to work it started up again. I tried to google it but couldn't find anything and as it had fixed itself I thought nothing of it.
This weekend I tried to use it for the British gt and just got nothing, the viewfinders gone grainy again and as a test I tried 1/30th I'm the bright sunshine and got f2.8. When I tried f2.8 I got a 3 second exposure.

Have phoned up today and the lens is going back for a repair as unfortunately I am out of the 7 day refund period.

Edit: I'm so happy to report that after speaking to Chris I will get a refund even though I am out of the 7 days period. I am so glad about this and a big thumbs up for mpb
