Hi all i'm new here, my name's Lee.

I was pointed to this site as it was recommended for second hand lenses.

Unfortunately i can not see the classified section because i am a new member.

I do wildlife photography and have been shooting with a Nikon AF-S 300mm f4. I was to upgrade and i'm looking for a 300 2.8

Unfortunately the Nikon 300 2.8 is out of my price range so i'm looking for a sigma 300 2.8.

Anyone know of any for sale?

Thanks,
Lee

Hi Lee,

Welcome to TP. Just join in the forum and you will soon have access to the classified.

Thanks for the replies, and thanks for the welcome.
I have heard nothing but good things about the sigma 300 2.8. From fellow wildlife photographers, i am in need to get a lens pretty fast as have the deer rut coming up and i've also got some things to finish with a red fox project i've been working on.
Just can't seem to find any :-(
Would consider a 120-300 2.8 sigma

IMHO Going from the Nikon 300mm f/4 to a old Sigma 300mm f/2.8 isn't the best of ideas, If budget is tight maybe look at a Sigma 120-300mm f/2.8 (older version) which is far better than the Sigma 300mm f/2.8 or you could look at the Sigma/Tamron 150-600mm or just get converters for your lens?... The best option for you would be to save around £2200 and get a used Nikon 300mm f/2.8VR1

IMHO the 300mm f2.8 is a tripod or monopod lens only

If you are thinking about hand holding it even 25% of the time you should try one before you buy

I have both the f4 and f2.8

If you read the reports you may find that at f5.6 and above the f4 is almost as good as the f2.8

If you want more reach the Nikon TC14Ell is a good option with the f4 at about £200 used

Yeah it would be, but i just can't justify spending that much at the minute with other commitments i have on going :-( I would really like an f2.8 aperture. I didn't want to stop lower than f4 thats why i'm not just getting a converter. I need the shallow depth of field.
The reviews i've read about the 120-300 2.8 are very mixed and were making me unsure.

f2.8 gets expensive ……. and to get quality you will need to spend the money

with wildlife photography you won't need to use f2.8 much to get shallow DOF, especially if you are on a tripod

Yes i understand that, i have seen the sigma 300 2.8 going for <700 and the 120-300 2.8 going for <800 non os version. That's my sort of price range.

I have never used the Sigma, but I would have thought that the 300mm f4 is better

With a heavy lens hand held you will need OS or VR to get anywhere near a sharpe image especially in UK light most of the year

Get the Sigma 120-300mm then, its better than the 300mm f/4 nikon & sigma 300mm f/2.8

Your be able to handhold a 120-300mm or 300m f/2.8 easily just depending on your build, the 300mm's aren't that heavy tbh, I use my 400mm f/2.8 handheld about 40% of the time and for BIF shots and I can handle that well...

Welcome aboard Lee...

Just a quick note re: the classifieds section. Everyone's correct in mentioning we do have "qualifying criteria" in place for seeing the trading sections, mainly to stop people either signing up just to dump old tat then disappearing, or to stop people signing up and hoovering up a bargain, then running away never to be seen again.

So, there's a threshold number of posts to be made and a duration of membership that has to be achieved. At the moment, I think it's 60 days and 25 meaningful posts - so not "+1", or "Nice shot", or "lol" (we tend to make those kind of "rush for the classifieds" posts "disappear" or just withhold any chance of the upgraded status ever happening if people are reported or spotted doing so) However - it's less than one post a day from registration, and if you're half serious about joining in with the community here, you'll do it without thinking.

Until then, I'd ask you to please refrain from directly asking about if anyone knows of kit for sale, to avoid you getting reported again for attempted trading outside the classifieds....

If you think that 60 days may be too long to wait, then I'm sure some of our membership will be able to recommend reputable second hand camera kit companies for you...

And to everyone else... can you please stop reporting this thread for off-classified trading now please - we're aware of it, and we're assuming that this was a genuine mistake by Lee. Thanks all.

Wow, i can't believe people are reporting this already, i'm only after a bit of advice and stuff. Also a friendly community of photographers to mingle with but obviously people are quick to jump on the gun and report.

I'm sorry if i bent the rules or have offended anyone!

Have a look at all the Sigma zoom range and read the online reports …… you can never have too much reach with wildlife photography

If you are buying used it depends what comes up and at what price

Keep contributing to the forum and post your images

Lee if you copy the BBCode form the share option in flickr the images show inline - I've taken the liberty of doing so with your image, if you'd rather I hadn't let me know and I'll remove - I've not edited at all. I think it is a very good image too :)

How exactly will f2.8 give you any more a shallow dof than that? There is nothing else in focus other than your subject and a few blades of grass which would still be in focus even at 2.8 surely as they're on the same plane.

Great shot though Lee, nice to see!

On a close up like that it's not a problem, when the subject is further away 2.8 sometimes looks really nice.

I have just looked at the stats on the usage of my 300mm f2.8 VR taken at the aperture of f2.8 = 4% of my total shots, (keepers)

You may then ask then question, do I need it?- I bought it to get to 600mm at f5.6 in a cost effective way …. or 900mm with a DX body

45% were taken at f5.6 using the TC20Elll

my use of this lens is mostly birds
