The Official Fuji X10/X20/X30/XF1/XQ1 Thread

Couple of nice shots there matey I like them both. I'm always amazed at the quality the baby Fuji cameras can produce.(y)

George.

They were trying to hang on the wind but didn't do so well. It was a point and hope shot as I couldn't see anything on the screen

Hi everyone, I'm picking up my X30 tomorrow! - I lost my camera bag and D5100 on holiday a few months back so very much looking forward to shooting again. Enjoying the pictures on this thread, hope to contribute soon.

I picked up my X30 yesterday afternoon :)
A few questions please.

What's the RAW situation?
I have LR4 and probably need to upgrade, but is the X30 already included in LR5 or are we still holding our breath?

Driving the camera over WiFi seems very hit and miss; what am I doing wrong?
I initially loaded the Fuji Camera Application, it didn't work and I suspect does not support the X30.
The Fuji Camera Remote seems to talk the the X30, but it never seems straight forward to make the connection and whenever I try firing up a different part of the app (remote, receive, browse, geotagging) then the connection is lost and I cannot reconnect without re-launching the app.
It sort of works, but I feel I'm missing something important...

Initial impressions...
The X30 looks HUGE, but compared to the max dimensions of the X10 the changes are insignificant. It's something about the styling. The X30 manages to fit in the same minimalist bag that I used with the X10, a Lowepro Apex 60, so that's great!
The X30 is noticeably heavier than the X10 (and X20), far more than can be accounted for by the bigger battery. The X30 will be more noticeable to carry around clipped to my waist and will probably rub my leg quite a bit more (an occasional problem with the X10 on a long walk).
The grip is lush - a definite improvement.
Compared to the X10, the IS is amazing! Full zoom at arms length and the image is rock solid. It is a completely different league to the X10 and feels more like my old LX3 which was good enough to produce acceptable 2s exposures hand held.
The LCD writing is smaller than both the X10 and X20. This is great as the info obscures the image far less, but I can see it may give some people problems reading it.
The viewfinder is fantastic and I can see I will be using it a lot (never used it on the X10). Easy to do just about everything in the viewfinder except for the placement of the Play button makes it really hard to review your images.
Manual focus works extremely well, the control ring is smooth and precise and the focus peaking is very intuitive. I think I'll be using MF quite a lot (unlike the X10 which the MF was horrible).

In summary - the X30 and I are going to get on just fine :)

Raw info here, Duncan.
Hmm - that's Camera RAW for Photoshop, I don't think that helps Lightroom (happy to be told I'm wrong).
It's also just a Release Candidate; the officially supported list of cameras is over here and doesn't list the X30.

At least your link indicates it won't be long before the X30 is supported in Lightroom (the X10 had a huge delay) - that's great news!
Looks like I'll be upgrading to LR5 this week :)

The link has changed, it listed the x30 when alan posted the link.

Usually when adobe release a new version of camera raw they release a new version of Lr too.

With the release of the Nikon D750 I would say a new release is imminent and I would have thought the x30 will be supported too.

Could you find a way to pipe the raw files through DNG Converter into LR4?

I've never tried that; was tempted with the X10 RAW delays but never did.
Lightroom is my normal workflow and it makes using RAW so easy.

When the X10 was released I used JPEG, which were so good that if you go back through this thread you will see it was actually quite hard to justify needing to use RAW; the only real reason is correcting white balance in PP.
I've absolutely no qualms about using JPEG on the X30 until RAW is supported in Lightroom.

Edited to add: if you have a link to a via DNG tutorial I will happily have a play and see how it goes.

I don't know a tutorial, but it is the simplest of systems. Download it, start it, tell it where your raws are and where you want the DNGs to go, and start it up!

I have never managed to get X10 raws into Aperture, which never announced support. I did manage to import the DNGs I created with the converter, no trouble. However, the results were MUCH worse than Fuji's own JPEGs. I guess this had a lot to do with the EXR sensor, which also resulted in different pixel dimensions as noted in other recent posts here! You shouldn't have that trouble with the X30? Although I suppose it has the X-trans, another tricky sensor design.

For fixing white balance etc, I guess there's the option of loading the raw back into the camera and re-processing it there... but I've never tried to do that!

I have had a chance to try the raw again and still haven't managed to get full size raw files.

Can anyone confirm if they have got full 12mp raw files from the XF1? I assume the X10 would be the same.

Just watched the DRev RX100 v X30 video...One thing he failed to mention, and the one thing that steers me away from the Sony...it doesn't have a hotshoe. Deal breaker for me :)

Just checked with Alexander White's book, Photographer's Guide to the Fujifilm X10, page 102:

"If you are using the RAW option on the Setup menu, the images will all be at the maximum image size of Large, in the 4:3 aspect ratio. However, if you turn on the RAW+JPEG option on the Setup menu, you will find that you can set the Image Size to Medium or Small. If you set the Image Size to M or S with RAW+JPEG turned on, and the ISO value is at least twice the Dynamic Range setting, you will find that the camera produces RAW files that are about 10 MB in size, or about half the size of normal RAW files. This some- what odd situation is a function of the camera’s EXR sensor, which doubles up the pixels on the sensor when the image size is Medium or Small."

I can no longer remember whether I was using raw+jpeg, but maybe this is the explanation. So try raw only and see what happens?

EDIT: he has done a X100s book, but no X20, and the next one planned is for the LX100, so I'm guessing there won't be one for the X30...

Thanks for the reply but I had tried both raw and raw+jpeg and the raw is half size in both settings.

I've just looked at the rx100 vs the lx100 as the Panny seems to offer a lot that I want. Then I saw the size of the lx100 which means that when I compare it to the XF1 i have, it'd be mahoosive ie approx 3/4" thicker and so not as pocketable... Will have to wait until I see one in the flesh to compare
