Westcott umbrella

I've just bought a Westcott brolly to use as a shoot through; one o' them that you can take the black bit off. It came off the outer edge alright but doesn't come right off as it seems permanently attached at the crown. This surprised me as I was expecting the black outer to separate completely and I didn't want to tug too hard in case I buggered it up. Is this how it should be or is it supposed to come away entirely?

My Westcott brolly has a steel tip that the black backing just slides over! And yes it comes off completely.

The one I have you have to unscrew the screw at the top to take off the black cover.

Thanks chaps! Mission accomplished. As you say Bruce, not the best design in the world, and the whole thing does seem a little fragile. Can anyone suggest a more sturdy model, perhaps with the black outer held on by pop studs instead?

Mine is the screw off type too.
Since removing the black cover for the first time, when I need to have it on I have it just over the cap. Can't be bothered to unscrew the crown.

Not the best design.

The 43" Westcott I used to have fell apart, bloody useless thing, by far the most expensive and has majorly put me off buying anything Westcott again. I have a few very cheap Bessels (about £7-£10 each), which haven't seen much use, but seem fairly ok - I got them for on location fill. My favourite is a Lastolite (£20 I think), white reflective and shoot through, which I think is very well made.

I'm not a lover of my Westcott umbrella either. I've given up on the black cover as everytime you fold the brolly down all the caps which go over the spine come off and then when you need to use it again you have to spend the next 10 mins locating them all on again. I'm only using it as a shoot through now. What a waste of money. :-(

Lastolite far better made. I had a Westcott, lasted about a month, absolute rubbish. I've had the Lastolite for nearly 18 months and it looks pretty much like new. I've also got a few Bessels for location/chuck if they break/don't care/dirt cheap, about £7-8 each, and even they are better made.
