weekly Jason's 52 in 2014 - SUPPORT Added - We've made it to the end together :-)

Hi, well it certainly is punchy just the razor blade and blood would have been enough for me, struggling to see the point of the frame and the wood
as mentioned above the slits in the wood on the right enter the pic but the others don't, I am sure you have your reasons

CUT .... (y) ... I do like this kind of thing you do Jason, and thanks for showing the SOOC image. This encourages me to brush up on my layering skills.

Hi Jason... my turn for lots of catching up now!

Communication - nice take with good, effective PP. I do agree with Graham (@overbez ) that as it's B&W more contrast would work well on the key. I like that the shadows are pretty much consistent, too.

Dark - I really like. The shadows could be lifted but I think it'd be a slightly different picture then and I like it as it is. Really good conversion and technically bang on shot, which for me might benefit very slightly from upping the exposure at the top end of the curve so that we have less midtone and more highlights, especially on the foreheads? But that's being super picky and might just reflect the fact I like super high contrast in B&W! (y)

Big - nice job, lovely shadow and great background and POV. So much to tick in that photo. The only thing which puts me off slightly are a few blown highlights on his shiny helmet - it's a very difficult subject to light in that regard and pretty certain I couldn't have done better. Might have been necessary to do some exposure blending, perhaps? Still, it's bloomin' fantastic.

Cut - I like it... but I think I prefer the previous two! It's difficult to know where the PP starts and finishes which is both a positive and a negative! Very cleverly done and still a very high quality image but that's the problem when you keep resetting the bar higher and higher ;)

cut - thought provoking one there. Like the bright red frame, complementing the blood (looks real!), and the bright white really works.

Love the little highlights on the top and bottom of the blood, the tree trunk overlay works well to draw the eye into the very centre of the image.

Like the SOOC, seeing the extra bit in the corner of the shot is humorour (to me anyway), but shows that you had your idea of what to do, the bit you needed was right, and you werent worried about anything else!

Hi, time is short, I'm afraid...:(

Cut, quite stark image and certainly on theme.

Not quite getting the tree bit, thought, I suspect it's me, though.

Cheers.

Hi Jason

yup ,like that a lot....stark ,bold ,like the texture....thumbs up from me ( can't get smilies to work :-( )

Thanks Lynne...glad you like it :)

Here we go...

Big - Damn look at that, big head that sure is, great focus on this, the surface he is standing on shows the minimal DoF and that really works, nice little reflection too - Nice One (y)

Cut - Great image, presuming the blade/blood is your work, I would like to see the drips dripping vertically rather than on the wonk, theme wise works well, PP wise excellent as usual, and the red inner frame works really well too (y)

Thanks for the comments DK !

Hi Jason

Communicate - an interesting use of the techniques and works well for the theme even tho the theme word is in there - it is the phrase that takes it out of the ordinary - and the shot of the key. Good work

Dark - good choice - like the lighting, partic how it graduates from left to right, so that there is a visual representation of dark as well as the subject matter. Good detail in the bones

Big - really like that - vivid colours, good pov and dof and the unusual backlight really makes it a bit out of the ordinary

Cut - another punchy, vivid interesting image. I like the contrast between the rectangle of the centre and the roundness of the log(?). My only crit would be that the splits in the log on the right hand side seep into the rectangle and fade away whereas to the left there is a sharp stop at the rectangle boundary

Thanks for the mega crit there. Really appreciate the comments. Splits in the log were left in on the right intentionallly, felt if balanced the image overall.

Hi, well it certainly is punchy just the razor blade and blood would have been enough for me, struggling to see the point of the frame and the wood
as mentioned above the slits in the wood on the right enter the pic but the others don't, I am sure you have your reasons

Hi Allan, yup see above regarding splits in the wood. Cross section of tree was to represent cut visually without resorting to gory sawn off hands etc :)

CUT .... (y) ... I do like this kind of thing you do Jason, and thanks for showing the SOOC image. This encourages me to brush up on my layering skills.

THanks David....Set yourself one weeks theme to produce a mega PS composite and then show it off to us all huh?

THanks Paul for the mega comments...all very worthy points of note you've raised. wish I had more time in general to pay attention to these details. Thanks as always (y) Still planning to stop in on your thread. Hopefully I'll get there before week 52

I agree with d00d on this one Jason ... I like the creative side of your posts very much....you create some great images, and it's good to something different.

Thanks Susie for the comments. Im no purist and for me its all about the photoshop....ha ha ha (evil laugh)

Hi Graham...yup, thats my old faithful mix of honey and red / blue food colouring right there. THanks for the comment - made me smile :) Your comments are always really well considered and I know you put a lot of effort and time into them..Thank you for that.

Hi Andy - Thanks for the crit....have a read above re tree trunk thoughts

Hi, that reminds me of something or a style of photograph  can't put my finger on it though, it does work well though an interesting take on the theme

Certainly is different, a simple looking set up, with the type of shadow that we'd normally run a mile from. Would be all to easy to point at the cut off stalk in the apple shadow and be looking for the banana stalk shadow to not be encroaching on the "vignette"... Even the central highlight on the apple..

But I think that would be missing the point of this, is quirky and unconventional and the sort of thing I'd love to be brave enough to try. :)

Top work mate

Thanks Allan....The processing is a film noir type processing (with noise reduced) if that helps - done in silver efex......Also may be that you're thinking of a fun technique called 'shadow swap'

Now that is different... I like it, and agree about the dancer :)

...not so sure on the reflection with only part of the nana, but it does have something about it that I too seem to recall from somewhere, no idea where from though

Thanks DK. appreciate you stopping in

Thanks Graham....I like this comment....feel too that we can get hung up on the details to often instead of just presenting something simple that makes the viewer think Oh....this is crap, or whatever else it is they think. Yup the setup was simple, I have added a link to the step back shot over here -------->

THe little round thing in the front is a one node led light

Hi Jason

Like that a lot , the processing really works here , harsh , hard , noisey ,stark but it works

Just goes to show that shadows and reflections aren't always bad! Really like this one (y)

Balance, like it. The processing is nice and gritty as is the central composition, just a little close at the top (uber critical).

I'm a border man myself so (y)

Silver Efex Pro?

Cheers.

Hi Jason, that's a top quality image :) I really like your take on it (thematically) and the composition is brilliant.

I'm very slightly less keen on the processing/effect, but I realise you've chosen that look because that's what you wanted. Can't fault any of it at all and I really like it. Very well done! (y)

THanks everyone for your comments. Really appreciate them. Yes Andy...Silver efex on used on balance (y)

That Jason, is phenomenal.

Now I know my way around Photoshop a bit but I am absolutely amazed by the skill needed for that sort of transformation. The eyes, the beard, the teeth, the ears are all sublime.

Even the full res version reveals nothing to pull you up on, the selection around the sticky up hair is perfect and is one area where someone with lesser skills would fall.

Absolutely awesome and beautifully current.

Would love to know what Mrs Glyn had to say about it....

Hi, excellent bit of PS there though slightly scary, with DK a little on the BG doesn't really look dark enough if you know what I mean (not dark in a light kind of way)
you obviously have some good PS skills and a slightly twisted imagination, its all good

Hi Jason

Balance - what an excellent idea, well handled in an extremely stark way. Bang on theme but with lots of added extras- the interpretation of the dancer is spot on, the film noir approach adds to a sinister feeling of the whole, the vignette alludes to the silent move days, b&w etc.

Change - this is not the kind of image that i am comfortable looking at, so I would just echo the views on the technicalities by DK @Dark Knight , Graham @overbez and Allan @alsjazzera

Blimey Jason... That is scary !!!!

Some excellent work again, not so keen on the background, but really like the PP on the young lad (y)

THanks for the comments DK. Much appreciated

THanks Graham for the nice comments. I am pleased with it too. Probably the most time I've spent on a composite. Really enjoyed doing the beard - Each strand of hair drawn by my own fair hand, using my graphics tablet for the first time since getting it as a xmas prezzie 3 years ago lol :). Oh and Mrs Glynn is not a fan! ;)

THanks Allan. Good point about the background. Intentionally chose a less dramatic background as an attempt not to overshadow the subject.

Mental, and quite scary :)

Good work and well thought out.

No sleep for me tonight

Cheers.

Ha Ha Andy. THanks for looking mate

Week 43: Grow

Struggled abit with time and theme so resorted to my old faithful graphic design type composite.

link to start images here ------->

Week 43: Bubbles Reshoot

Cliche image I know but something I wanted to try for a while nonetheless. Had no glass dish so had to use a plastic dish which had lettering which shines through oops...I do like the aligator skin type effect though :).....also underestimated how much fiddling is required to get the mix of bubbles right.

Hi Jason

Change....Amazeballs........I struggle with basics in PP like cloning & levels adjust so in total awe of your abilities ....cracking thought process as well :clap:

Grow....effective & simple with a lovely calming color palette which I really like :)

Hi Lynne. Thanks for the comments (y) Green happens to be my favourite colour, has been since I was a kid.

I would prefer some stuff you had photographed (or did you do the plant ??) Real nice image still Jason, bright and fresh looking, love how you pull these together :)

Thanks DK. Yup I did photograph the plant. Before this years 52 is over, I aim to produce one composite in which I will photograph each element / object /texture used within....watch this space :)

Hi Jason

Change is an absolute belter - really great thought process (nice and original) and a superb end image. You've done exceptionally well to make the PP seem relatively natural-looking which is a massively impressive feat given the level of PP undertaken! A very big  for this one...

Grow - nice shot, the background does look a touch stuck on but the take of the letters and compositing is otherwise very well done. Not an attention-grabbing shot in the same way Change is, but it's still very well done.

Reshoot is nice - bubbles was a hard one for me and you've done this very well. (y) from me!

Some great shots again Jason, keep it up :)

Really enjoyed doing the beard - Each strand of hair drawn by my own fair hand,

Blimey - even more impressed now you've said that!

GROW, nice colour choice and good use of the swirly BG to lead from the plant in the top to the one in the bottom, wondering if the letters need something to ground them, but as I canlt decide if they're meant to be "on" the BG, or floating above it I can;t get much further with that thought process. :)

BUBBLES is great - love the variation in size, and the bubbles within bubbles, the letters and diagrams showing through tjust add that little bit extra to look at, and wonder if you;re actually seeing them or if you;re just seeing things. :)

Hi Jason ...bit of a catch up for me ... your Change image is amazing ...really wonderful work there on the transformation, and well done to your model on his scary pose. :)

I really like the images you create and the fact that you give us an insight into the 'before and after.' I love the sharpness of the leaves against the pale tiles with the letters on for Grow ...not sure about the 'up '...I don't know if you need that, but another very original creation.

Bubbles made me really want to try that one again...it seems ages since it was one of the topics....really interesting colour and textures in there.

I'm looking forward to your composite :)

Hi, Grow, looks like a poster you can buy in Ikea (meaning this in a good way) :) Well composed and the (-Up.) really adds to the photograph IMO.

Bubble, that's what the TP52 is all about, trying new techniques.

Cheers.

Well Jason, what can I say about change.......
not-worthy%20%281%29.gif
.............excellent PP, superb image (y)

Change .... had a quick peek

Grow .... like the added greenery

Bubbles Reshoot .... absolutely love it, I better you had fun making that.

Cool... Lovely bright/sharp image that, nicely taken mate :)

Look forward to seeing your own composite (y)

Cut - I like this but maybe with the texture of the wood graduating under red frame to just be white in the centre. What did you use as blood? It looks particularly real.

Balance - I like the grittiness of this complimented by the framing. I assume the fruit is on a mirror as your getting double shadows on the background. The texture of the apple certainly stands out on this.

Change - Great composite image and some superb PP'ing on your part Jason. I definitely like this one. I think is could easily be on the front of a magazine (albeit the crop would need to change) it's so good.

Grow - At first I thought this as a bit of a cop out given the brilliance of the previous week except I like it the more I looked at it. In the end I think it was simplicity of the addition of [-Up.] at the bottom which made it for me.

Reshoot - A real pattern shot which you can see more in the longer it is viewed. The top right big bubble even looks like a globe with the continents showing darker. Love the choice of the green as well.

Change - very scary and spot on for the theme!

Grow - like the addition of the word "up" in this one - Scrabble's something we never grow out of!

Bubbles - great composition and colours.(y)

Ooopppss....missed you Bubble reshoot

Good mix of big & small , a little bit of texture showing through on the bigger ones works nicely-adds a bit more dimension & focus looks good so a (y) from me

Thanks Lynne. appreciate your comments and visit (y)

THanks David...Bubbles was fun. Had to kick the the wife out the kitchen - she wouldnt be impressed seeing the half bottle of Olive oil I wasted :)

Cool... Lovely bright/sharp image that, nicely taken mate :)

THanks DK. Week 52 will be the all-in composite; its been decided ;)

WOw, thanks Peter very much for the mega catch up. Always enjoy reading your comments. Cut - Blood is a mix of syrup or honey with red and blue (tiniest amount) added. Balance - Yup well spotted, Fruit was placed on a mirror.
Thanks again for the visit.

Hi Elaine. Thanks for the comments. I really do appreciate them. Agreed about scrabble - Love that game - A true classic! ;)
