OS X Yosemite

Started with my MacBook Air to ensure all my programmes worked OK especially PS/LR5 & my plugins, suitably satisifed after also loading the numerous other programme updates to load on my IMac work horse. Happy no proplems to date.

Well, looks like all is not rosey on the Yosemite front, WiFi problems, speed issues and application compatability to name but a few. Handoff looks really good (although to me it's nothing more than a gimmick), but as per normal the networking side has gone to ****.. Microsoft would be shot for flaws such as these!

Macbook Pro 13 Retina at work is playing ball which is nice, but it doesn't stop some BYOD users complaining!

I'm regretting upgrading I can't sync my music from iTunes to my iPhone now - it's just not having it !

They've finally got round to being able to send SMS messages (green) from iPad & Mac with the IOS 8.1 update :)

I've changed the colour scheme to the only other alternative - grey / graphite. Now it is the blandest and the most boring UI on earth. :bang: 10.9 looked just fine.

So far everything is OK on the old MBP, but they should have really called it OSX Kindergarden. I'd love to get the old UI back or at least tone down the colours a bit.
Or OSX Utopia !

Doesn't work for me :(. Was looking forward to being able to do this. Updated and in imessage I still can't send to a none iphone.

Does your Mac meet the minimum specification?

It works perfectly well for me across iPhone, iPad and MacBook Air.

Even the road hawk hd camera :p

I'm not using it on the Mac as I'm not installing Yosemite. I'm using it on the iPad. Both it and the phone are on ios 8.1 so it should work.

You do realise this thread is about OS X Yosemite (y)

Have you enabled it on your Iphone. Settings.....Messages....Text Message Forwarding Then follow the prompts to allow your iPad /Mac to send and receive SMS (Green) messages.

The text message forwarding preference item wasn't appearing initially. Then the code didn't appear on the ipad to put in the phone. After a lot of messing around with changing various settings, turning iMessage off and on it finally sent the code. It worked a few times. :) It's certainly not as straightforward as sharing iMessage streams across devices.

Runs like a dream on my late 27" iMac. I do agree that the flat colouring on the icons is a bit Meh - I prefer the previous look. I wasn't too fussed about the new features - I was mainly looking forward to the stability side of things. Safari is much much better and I've actually stopped using Firefox because of it. Mac mail is still too basic for my needs so I'll carry on using MS outlook - still need to try the aperture upgrade though......

Thunderbird for email.

Lightroom has now Aperture import plug in :)

....I read on Apple Discussions a few days ago that there were problems with that plug-in.

A new Mac OS is always exciting but I am waiting until I hear that the inevitable dot-0 bugs are patched. I'll probably wait until at least 10.10.1.

Updated my iMac yesterday, so far so good. Seems a bit slower if anything, but I 'only' have 8GB at the mo'.

I do like the iCloud Photos, even though it's in Beta, the ability to view/play all my photos from my iPhone/Ipad without having to go through iPhoto/aperture is great.

Not installed it on any of the machines yet, but MBP will be first when/if I do. Almost did it the other night, but Apples ridiculous insistence on confirming CC details for a free download stopped me, I simply couldn't be bothered going getting them. I have looked at some screen grabs and wondering about those dock icons, do they really look as much like some kind of kids first alphabet pictures as they seem?

I've never seen such detail on an alphabet ;) I really like it and appreciate it for what it does. Just not convince about the White buttons on a grey background. Especially in Safari and the likes. That part looks like a prototype placeholder. Other than that it is rock solid and works well.

Does anyone know if they have fixed the following problems which have been around for at least the last 2 releases:
1. 'Disk not ejected properly' bug where the OS repeated mounts and dismounts certain USB disks / card readers
2. Repeated and frequent Spotlight re-indexing of the hard drive

As I've not experienced it in the previous two releases, I can only confirm that I'm still not experiences that in the current release :)

I've found a bug on time machine.
If you enter time machine, you can not always browse to different folders and sometimes you can't even go back in time.

Anyone else having this problem. A quick google suggests it's not just me.

I have now managed to upload my iTunes onto my iPhione there was a conflict with both having Wifi and cable options checked. Perhaps obvious to some but not to me. To be honest I haven't really noticed any difference at all, I'm not sure what all the hype is about. Am I missing out on something ?

Hi, decided to update and no real issues so far, although my MBP seems faster.

One small issue is that when I turn my MBP I get the update screen - not sure if it's called that, but it has the Apple logo and the bar that I saw when I updated.

Any reason for this?

Cheers all.

My MacBook does that too - I just assumed it was a "feature" of the new OS.... just illustrating the boot progress, in lieu of the twirly circle thing.

Anyone concerned about security of personal information? I'd guess mostly not here, but this might be of interest to some that have migrated to Yosemite:
  1. Open text editor, create some new documents. Store PII, passwords, seed values, phone call notes, love letters, et c. in them.
  2. Quit text editor.
  3. Reopen text editor several times over the course of a year, add more notes. Previous notes remain, safely in ~/Library/Saved Application State/ on my local, encrypted computer.
  4. Upgrade to Yosemite
  5. Notice that all of my locally-stored, “unsaved” documents open in my text editor have now been uploaded in full to a partner in NSA’s PRISM program.
https://datavibe.net/~sneak/20141023/wtf-icloud/

The point being that much more of your personal information is being made available to security services, and anyone else able to access personal files on iCloud. That may be a price you consider acceptable in order to access documents, emails & addresses etc across multiple platforms.

So how do you think handoff would work if it didn't store those states online? Seems pretty obvious to me.

No I am not concerned about that. I wouldn't keep those kind of details just in a unencrypted text editor anyway. Just disable any cloud based access and functionality.

Anybody using FileVault? I saw a very scary post from a guy who was using FV and basically bricked his iMac upgrading to Yosemite. The install hung for many hours and then he tried to restart it. He took it to a genius bar and they resurrected it but all the data was toast. Quite a bit of anecdotal stuff on the web about this too. http://osxdaily.com/2014/10/17/os-x-yosemite-installation-stuck/

Some people are pointing fingers at FileVault but it seems if the install hangs you must wait it out - no matter how long it takes.

Yes I do. File vault is on. No issues with it. No particularly lengthy upgrade either.

After a very positive start with Yosemite installing easily I had a new pop-up about every hour telling me...

To run this web content you need to install the Java Runtime Environment

Which offers a link telling me I need Java 8u20, but there is no 8u20 at the link (or anywhere it seems) so I installed the latest update of that the 8u25. Java's own website scanned my iMac to say it was successfully installed and now I get the pop-up a little less frequently, about every 2 hours - Grrrr

I've not noticed an issue with anything I view online either, which seems odd

However - I have an iPad 1 (the original and it still works !!!) and when I went to upload some more photos for a couple's album design viewing not only did it not upload them, but it deleted every other photos on the iPad !!! Double Grrr

I've not even tried to resolve that one as yet :(

It seems pretty obvious to me too, that any kind of system which offers to share my data across different devices is going to host it somewhere on the internet, and if that system belongs to Apple then it will be iCloud. However not everyone will realise that, and certainly a lot will not expect that the default setting is to upload your data without asking to the cloud. It would bother me enough that, if I were planning to upgrade to Yosemite, that I'd disable network connectivity until I could find the setting to turn off that kind of sharing, and then monitor the system to see if it was still trying to access my data.

To some, having that kind of facility is a very good reason for buying an Apple. To others, it is one of the disadvantages.

I'd suggest that is not related to Yosemite. Apple doesn't use java for anything. I'd suggest you take a look at your extensions, launch daemons etc it will be a non apple application or service that is requesting this.

I agree that it should have been switched off by default. Or at least have a specific question pop up during the upgrade process or installation process to enable this to happen. It think that is the naughty bit and shouldn't really happen in this day and age.

Cheers,
JP

Um, good? I guess it works sometimes. I'd be amazed if Apple hadn't tested it at all.

Aren't Apple and Sun/Oracle still having a row over this? New installs of OSX don't have a Java Runtime - and some upgrades of OS X handily remove one if you already have it. It's supposed to "improve security" by stopping stuff working.

IIRC when Yosemite was first released, the JRE installer for it didn't work.

I've actually brought my system upto date for a java hackathon tomorrow. My ide required java 6 runtime which installed no problem direct through the apple provided link. And in addition I've got the jdk for both 7 and 8 installed from oracle. No issues there either with Yosemite.

Interesting as I will move accross once Aperature 3 is nuked
Aren't you waiting and see what the replacement will bring?
