Yes another selfie and another hoodie esque shot. Blame David @minnnt as he reminded me that I wanted to do this.

Shot using OCF snoot with foam packaging as diffusion and 35mm focal length as my remote shutter cable is only 1 metre long and I used both my rf-302's for the OCF.

Even at f8 & 1/200s there was still some ambient light coming into the seen (damn my large lounge window) but I have burnt out those bits in the background. I have bumped clarity and warmed the images up a tad.

2. Does it look better with the eyes boosted?

What with your pink fluffy rabbit slippers ;)

We all know you are a pussy cat :p :sneaky:
Ha ha. Slippers are something I don't possess, haven't done for many, many years and will never possess again in the future.

These are ace Bryn, I love the dark moodiness:D

The vampire teeth is a great idea, you could do something really sinister for tomorrow, face paint etc ;)

Moody looking images bryn! Get some vampire teeth in and it looks pretty scary! :)

Thanks mate even more stuff to buy from poundland. Though would have to make teeth look more realistic. But a great idea

Thank you T. I will do some scary ones. Mewahhhh haha hahahaha

On the computer now and the one with the un-edited eyes works best for me.

Great did wonder if the brightening the eyes ruined the effect.

That how you see yourself? Some bemused, faintly fearful night creature, or perhaps a burglar trapped in the beam of a security guard's torch?

Lol not at all was just a idea that may or not have worked with the snoot lighting I DIY'd.

I do like the mood the light gives, however I could and will try other poses. Its all experimentation when i looked at camera it all got a little weird.

Remember.. images ALWAYS communicate even if you don't want them to. The "mood" the lighting gives is of furtive nocturnal activities I'm afraid..... or a scene from Close Encounters.. can't decide which :)

Oooo other poses. Can't wait to see them. :D

lol always so supportive thanks.... :D

At this close range then yes that light seems to produce either one of those types of effect. Would it feel the same if I wasn't wearing a hoodie though? I do like low key images but don't really want to go for the crimewatch... thug type really especially if I shoot my kids with this type of light.

Hopefully at a larger range the effect is ballet spot light type of effect. Thats my other thread of my Wife.

Possibly not.. it may then shift from furtive to beam me up a little more.

remember, with no context, we draw upon our internal frames of reference. All of us will try to make sense of an image based on what we have filed away in your memories. These "cultural references" are what help us to make sense of imagery and texts. I have no idea what you were trying to say about yourself, so I rooted through the filing cabinet of my cultural references and came up with furtive night time creeping around, because YOU encoded the image witj the signs that we, as westerners read as such... Dark... shadows... hoodie... We join the dots and make up a narrative.

No.. definitely do NOT shoot your kids with this type of light.... not unless you've been comissioned by the NSPCC for a campaign against child abuse.

Yes.... widening the light to show the viewer that it's NOT a back alley (or whatever their cultural references are conjuring up) but instead a stage perhaps, would massively change the connotations.. as would what the child is wearing.

If anyone is interested in this... then if you're up for it.... here's a link to Roland Barthes' "Rhetoric of The Image" Bearing in mind he's a French Philosopher, not a photographer, it's not an easy read, but he breaks down a simple photo into it's signs and signifiers, and explains how the image works upon us.

Thank you so much for the detailed response David and I will have a troll through that pdf as it seems something I might find interesting. I am experimenting so there may not be a direct point in what I am trying to achieve rather a bumble into an effect. Though for this I have seen many shots before and it has been something I wanted to try.

You see, when I did mine, I just looked like a monk. :D

Can't wait to see Beth's attempt, should look fresh with the dungarees. Ol' Raggydoll herself.

Thats cause you are so Saintly  also the way you positioned yourself, saying that positioning was something I really struggled with.

Here you go... One snoot selfie. (and by snoot, I mean an icing piping attachment attached to the end of my flashgun...;) )
