Anyone been and can any recommend any additional gear i should take besides my camera and lens?

A tripod if you want to do some night photos of the strip and hotels lit up. I used a gorillapod on a 400d when I went..and a comfy pair of shoes for all the walking about ! It's a fair distance to get round the huge hotels but a fascinating place for photography I think.:)

Cheers, think I will pick up a gorillapod, had a look and they will fit in my shoulder bag I am taking with me.

Plenty of things to rest your gear on so no need for tripods etc.

Maybe a low f lens otherwise , there's a lorra walking to do!

hire a car - its a big place & theres lots to see - especially out of the city..

The other half and I are lucky enough that her auntie and cousins live just outside Las Vegas so they will be our tour guides/taxi service while were there! Just glad i have a bag that i find comfy enough to carry for a while with my camera in so it doesn't feel too heavy.

I've been to Vegas a few times and love it, if you can get a car it would be handy for the very early starts that your relatives probably will not want to get up for :)

The best thing in Vegas by a long way is the Big Shot ride on top of the Stratosphere. Go for a midnight ride, then afterwards you can take some aerial shots of the strip lit up (or maybe before if you want your photos to have a level horizon!). If you want a break from the the glitz/fakeness, Valley of Fire State Park is an hour away and has some amazing geological features to photograph.

I got married there..... & love it....

We were looking at going up the Stratosphere, didn't realize you can ride the Big Shot at night time, might have to do that instead of a day time ride.

It's the best part of a decade since I was there and it might have changed, but as I recall it closed at 1am. The sensation when you can't see anything but the lights way below is unrivalled.

we had the misfortune of just having a day and a half there, apparently the view from the top of the Mandalay Palace at sunset is amazing but we scheduled our trip in the midst of several congresses so the place was booked out.

Neon Museum is interesting, that requires a wideangle.

Is it just me? We had the misfortune of having a day and a half there. it was like Blackpool only warmer. Loved the rest of our US trip - San Francisco, Sausalito. Yosemite, Death Valley, Palm Springs, Salton Sea, San Diego, Pacific Coast Highway, and so on - but loathed Vegas.

I hope you did Joshua Tree as well John?

As for the comparison with Blackpool I would say that there are fewer tracksuits and tattoos in LV, too far from Liverpool and Manchester:exit:

Yes indeed Peter, we did the Joshua Tree National Park. We drove through north to south on our way between Palm Springs and the Salton Sea stopping to take lots of pix. I liked it but madam found the Joshua Trees a bit monotonous after a while. She liked the Pelicans at the Salton Sea though.

I have been 2 times .the bus service is very good so if you do not want to hire a car then use that . We stayed on the stip

Been twice - 2008 (married there) and 2013 (to start and finish a California road trip).

There are some great locations in and nearby Vegas - I'd definitely try and have access to your own car for a couple of days and take some comfy trainers for when you're on the strip - you're going to do a lot of walking!

I'd try and take a monopod and something like a gorilla pod if you can which should just about cover most situations.

You'll have a great time but take plenty of $ as it isn't cheap!

Valley of fire is a great place for snaps, near the city by Lake Mead, also Red Rock Canyon just on the outskirts.
