Should I wait for fresh chips?

Yes
I need tp replace my Mac book and my iMac as both are now over 4 years old.

However, I see from rumours that Apple may start to ship both with new Bradwell chips during the first half of 2015.

Is it worth the wait. What is there to gain by waiting for the new Bradwell.

Should I get out and buy now

I think that this may have been published in the wrong section. Should be in computers. Not sure how to do it

Reported it to mods to get it shifted for you.

If you don't need to upgrade your laptop quite yet then I'd wait for the Broadwell since you could see a 30% increase in battery life over a similarly powerful Haswell CPU. Haswell was already a big improvement over Ivy Bridge in this regard.

For an iMac I wouldn't think there would be any real improvement with going with Broadwell other than possibly a tiny bit less fan noise due to it being more efficient.

The only downside to Broadwell is that the series will be quickly replaced by Skylake (late 2015), which will have even higher efficiency along with some new features/enhancements (wireless charging?).

Thanks Bob.
It reminds me of the "old days" when I wanted to buy a new record player/sound system Every time I was about to buy it, there was an announcement about a new, improved model about to be launched.
So, you are saying that Broadwell is better than Haswell for the laptop but the iMac is good to go now with little on the immediate horizon worth waiting for, other than a bit less in the way of fan noise.
If that is correct then I might go for the iMac straight away and leave the lap top until mid 2015 .. unless anyone else has other ideas?

can i ask why you need to replace them as they are 4 yrs old. i have a mac book pro 5 years old and still going strong?

If you don't HAVE to I would wait a little. Or just get the iMac now and wait with the notebook.

I know I am :)

I replaced my 5 yr & 2 week old iMac this Thu after visiting the Apple Store & setting up my Mates 5K machine, funny I asked the same question to the techie there & he said if it was a MacBook yes wait as he had heard the same rumour (not via Apple) but for the 5K iMac little advantage. Have to say the extra speed in processor going from 2.66 i5 to 3.40Mhz is marginal but the Fusion Drive is magic & the screen is out of this world. PSCC 2014 is so different & shows much better detail.

The other advantages is that I have USB 3 external drives these are performing really well & I had acquired a 12TB Thunderbolt 2 drive which is RAID & is so blistering fast loading images now. A good choice after all. A MacBook 15" Retina is now planned to replace the MacBook Air

I would visit the store & get the 5K, however if your going for the none 5K its not worth upgrading (even the Apple guy said that he said just add a ITb fusion drive at around £80)

Ross, fair question. I am now doing some pro sports photography work and need to be very speedy with on site editing and transmission of images to media. My current laptop is slow - partly due to 2mb Ram I could upgrade but decided that by the time I have spent that money I could be well on the way to a new model with USB3 and all the other improvements that will aid my need for fast editing and transmission.

also if your a business go and see the business team at a authorised apple retailer or store. they are very helpful and should be able to give discounts.
