RiP Jane Bown

I was only thinking about how she must be getting on in years the other day. RIP

The passing over of the portrait photographer, who in my humble opinion, was the greatest one of the 20th Century.

She was one of the people who got me into photography, and was one of those who as Yv says, produced elegant work, so simply, yet to great effect.
My feelings about photography centre on people and capturing a moment - boy, could she do that well.
I hope she died peacefully.

What a sad sad day. She was a heroine of young photo students like us in the 50s
She was unique, and captured the people of her time like no other photographer.

She was an extraordinary photographer especially when you consider the times when it was very much a male dominated era. Her street work I always found exceptional & they moments she captured in the Stars images were cutting edge. I have often tried to emulate the B&W contrasts she obtained from her film work but never got it anywhere as good.

The idea that she created all of those amazing images with a camera and a single lens (85mm) pulled from her handbag, puts all the gear forums into perspective.
The Samuel Becket image is frame 3 of 5, and it's an iconic image, that's sublime artistry.

Absolutely. Those who are always upgrading and buying every imaginable accessory would do well to read about her.

Steve.
