Capture one pro 8

I downloaded the free version before Christmas and use it with filmpack 3.

In terms of efficiency it's terribly slow, even with a powerful computer, taking a couple of seconds to re-render images after each tweak, very sluggish handling catalogues etc. Some tools, like that for dust spot removal work poorly or are clunky in use. However I like it as an alternative to lightroom, for working on images with subtle colours and fine details, particularly when combined with the filmpack simulated film responses. Lightroom tends to make me process over-bright and saturated while DXOOP is much more restrained. It's no replacement for lightroom, but it does work well as an additional tool.

Ah methinks the ancient mariner is referring to Optics Pro. I have Had Capture One for a month or so and haven't fully exploited it but I was drawn by it's ability to extract more subtle details. I have got colours and tones from C1 that I can't get from OP or ACR. If you haven't already do a trial, they give 3 months if I remember correctly. It's very expensive to buy but if you are able to get hold of an earlier version (6 I think) which was given away free you can upgrade it quite cheaply.

Oops. That was an embarrassing failure to read properly.

I have Capture One as a free download for a Sony camera but haven't tried it yet.

How would you compare it to cs5 ?

Oh dear too many acronyms. If you mean ACR in Photoshop CS5 then ACR does a good job and Capture One is just different. I like it more for some things and, as I said, I find you can bring out more detail and subtle variation, I also like the quality of processing overall and generally I prefer it, but ACR, certainly from CS5 on, does a good job. The only way to know if it's worth it for you is to have a go with the trial version and see if you think it gives you something you're missing. I would try Optics Pro 10 as well as that offers different results to both of them but is less good with highlights. What are you using now and what are you looking for that you're missing?

Here's a picture I processed in Capture One then did some post stuff in Photoshop. It's a bit dark maybe but then it was pretty dull that afternoon and those clouds meant business. I'm posting it because it shows great details in the clouds that I couldn't get anywhere close to with ACR or Optics Pro.

I have Capture One as a free download for a Sony camera but haven't tried it yet.

I gave it a try and then brought the pro version (£21, cant beat that).
Im a heavy user of LR, been using it for years, and every now and then i give CO a go. I now feel its matured enough to give LR a good run for its money, so for my a6000 files ill only use CO. Its a bit of an uphill struggle coming form LR, as its completely different but seems similar if that makes sense.

So far i feel the output is visibly better from CO, although its harder work getting it at the moment.

I use CO for my own process and at work with some top tier Phase One digital backs. CO is well regarded amongst commercial photographers for its detail both across tonal ranges and in terms of pixels (sharpening..etc..). It's certainly a departure from Adobe's way of doing things and for those who seriously want to get to grips with what it can do, taking part in a day course would be a great idea.

£21.00 where was that from ?

I tried Capture One 8.3 and found a serious bug within a day or two. Importing files from another catalogue did not import all of them.

I'm more disturbed by the poor tethered capture. I thought that was the whole point of this software. With my camera I can't use the software to autofocus in live view, as I can with Canon EOS utility for example.
