I wonder if number 1 would be stronger with upped contrast to increase the silhouetting. Cropping out the stuff on the sand takes away distraction from the boys and gives the image a focal point and pleasing simplicity.

Can't see what you were trying to acheive with number 2. The scenery is a bit dull, and while the umbrella and flag pole provide a focal point, they don't belong with it and seem orphaned within the image.

I was trying to achieve a "layered" type of approach with the first - the action in the children was the main point with the rest emphasising scale and size

#2 was more of a deserted lifeguard point - they were usually under the umbrella - whilst there is a child in the water

here's another - again I was attempting to produce a shots showing the scale of the scene

Now I like the mono version you've just posted.

Hopefully someone else with a bit more insight will comment soon - I'm full of cold & not especially perceptive right now.
