Critique A shield bug, I think

My first go at taking bugs with my Sigma 105
I think that it is a hawthorn shield bug found on a lily plant in the garden, in a bad place to get at, I'm not too sure of the focus

It is indeed a Shield bug and well caught too, may I suggest next time try to get him/her face on

Good, well exposed, shots. Could be a Birch Shield bug but I think it looks more like the Hawthorn Shield bug.

Yes very good set only thing that I would do is try a lower angle the first one would be excellent face on to the bug

John, I do use the sigma quite a lot but not for Macro until now, its a brilliant 105 mm lens for anything and everything, must do more Macro now that I have made a start

Nice set and find! The first is my favourite as it looks to be sharpest and with good contrast, however there is a shadow from the leaf above falling over part of the subject (just something to try and watch out for). I agree with @LCPete, it would be good to try some shots from a lower angle. These guys will tend to stick around and left you fire off a few shots. They'll wander off when they've had enough
