Yes
Both taken as they were passing, only chance, what shutter speed ought I have used to show propeller movement.

Hi there

Two pretty good shots considering taken by chance. For prop blur it will depend a bit on the plane but a general rule would be about 1/250 sec, but for something like the Sea Fire in the second shoy you might get away with say 1/400 if it was moving quickly.

Thanks Paul, after looking at your Flickr photos - great shots - no need to doubt your advice . I think that I will try to make an effort to go to an air show next year.

Yes, thank you Philip. Nice shot

Nice captures, good to see the kennet aviation seafire in the air again after it's mishap. Shutter speeds, largely depends on what the aircraft is doing, and thus what power setting is being used. 1/250 will give you a good element of blur as has been said, but the Catalina has quite low revving big old radials so you may wish to drop down further. This shot was at 1/250 for a fast pass:

Seafire in the cruise you could go faster - here is an example at 1/320:

Thank Caleb, I will make a note of that. The prop blur makes so much diference. Great shots.

Hi there.. Prop and helo photos are always a tricky one as you have probably already established it means using long lenses at slow shutter speeds.
From my experience.. High performance prop aircraft as mentioned above you can normally get away with 250-320ish /th however this does depend on what the aircraft is doing... obviously at high speed and climbing the engine is working harder and the RPM is greater than say when it is coming into land where you may have to drop the shutter to 1/125th or slower..
Less performance aircraft vary on the aircraft but as a rule of thumb i would not go above 1/250 and try to stick to 1/125 region. Helos again are a different matter with a much slower RPM and look even worse when their props are frozen.
Here are a few examples.
