Looking on phone but for South of France they aren't awfully bright what settings are you using?

#3 is the best of the set and looks nicely in focus

The others look slightly out on the eyes front. Maybe one is in and it's the soft eyes confusing me.

Bad light, overcast today Bryn :( ISO 200 f8 and 1/60 I think. Nearly 250 photos taken and maybe 6-7 to show for it.
For me No1 is best with No3 behind.

Could be a Yellow-winged Darter Graham - Sympetrum flagellum

that would be my guess especially with black legs with yellow streaks

If you saw it with "red" dragons - Red Darters are males, but not the Yellow-Winged male, it is light orange, AFAIK

Ruddy Darters get everywhere and male Ruddy's are Red as are Scarlet Darters, the ones that I have seen seem to belt around

all are in your area

Mark will be along to confirm or not

Graham:

No 1 is soft and poorly composed.
No 2 is completely out of focus but is decently composed.

No 3 is the pick but could be a bit sharper.

No 4 also needs a sharpen but is half decently composed.

They all look a bit flat and need a contrast/levels/sats boost.

Can't see exif so cant guide on settings.

Thanks brash, settings as above.

What lens? No flash??

Nikon MF 35-105 macro.
Flash will arrive later this week :(
Cool. The flash should give you more flexibility. I suggest a shutter speed of 1/200ish if you can.

Male Red-veined Darter.

Dragonfly photos don't look great with flash, so I'd avoid using it.

These look like a levels adjustment would fix the poor contrast.

Mark, it looks nothing like the book, but I would settle for seeing either

I'll have another glass of "red"

I never use a Flash, "as the actress said to the Bishop"

Hi Graham agree with Brash on the sharpness and flat light
Mark is right about the flash tho it doesn't work well with dragonflies but as a little bit of fill flash it can brighten them up nicely
the first one has a great angle but needs more space in front
