Hi All,

I'm after your pearls of wisdom regarding my quandry. Having done a recent wedding I found myself needing a faster wider lens. My current lenses are 18-105 VR, 50mm 1.8 and 55-200 VR. I found my self using mainly the 50mm and 18-105, the 55-200 didn't make it out the bag.

I have been looking at the Tamron 17-50 2.8 (non VC) and the Tamron 24-75 2.8. I have kind of ruled out the 24-75 2.8 as its not wide enough, so I am leaning towards the 17-50 2.8...but I have a few questions.

I like the 18-105 as it has VR, but wondering if the 2.8 is a bigger advantage over VR ? Is the 17-50 2.8 quality equal/better than the 50mm 1.8 ?

Any advice you guys could give is appreciated.

I have been very tempted by the 28-75 (I guess you mean that lens?), but like you I am not sure due to the lack of wide angle. Then I think I would miss the extra reach of the 28-75 too!

2.8 will be an advantage over VR and having ith through the entire zoom is a bonus. You could sell both the 18-105, 55-200 and get the 28-75 and a wide angle?

I think there is a bit of a question that needs to be answered as to your longer term body plans. For me if you are planning on staying with a cropsensor for the foreseeable then go for the 17-50. Else get the 24-75.

2.8 throughout the zoom range is far more important then VR

Thx Hugh, I will be using cropsensors until I can afford a full frame, which is not going to be a for long time yet.

I have just purchased the 17-50 f2.8 andi must say i really like it. I looked at many many example images and found it to be close to the 17-40 f4 L for image quality. I don't think you will be disappointed!

i have a tamron 28-75 f2.8 and love it.

i chose it over the 17-50 as found my 18-55 didn't have enough reach
but i do miss that extra width
