Nice!

What was your new toy then?

A Canon 40d, my mum picked up it for on Saturday morning, so only used it a little bit on the Sunday, so alot of the stuff to come was taken with 30d on the Saturday.

Thanks very much, quite pleased overall, did muck a few up this weekend until i got used to the 40d

Nice shots as always russ, just seems a bit smooth to me?

I was thinking the same tbh, i have only applied the same defaults as normal, shot raw, maybe needs the contrast up'd or a tad more sharpening? Not sure.

what lens did you use?

I was thinking of getting the 300mm for sports ect...

300mm f4 is cracking lens, over the weekend i mainly used the 400mm f5.6, and the 70-200mm f2.8, i mainly use the 300mm f4 for cars.

If you click on the image it hot links to the site where you'r find more examples, but also the exif file.

the images of the HM plant bikes (2 and 3) are fantastic

they are the sort of images i'd pay money for to hang in the garage by my Hondas

was you one of the fellas standing on a little step ladder

Thanks Royster, i have actual sent 2 like those to be printed as 18X20" posters, planning to get them signed at Donnington too.

Jonny

No, i have never used a step ladder.

Interesting reflection on the visor on this one

I cant believe the detail retained within the shadows, not sure on this photo tbh, but just think the light at the time was from the otherside of the bike, meaning this whole side of the bike should cast in shadow.

That reflection is lovely!

Know what you mean about the shadow thing too.

Going back to another question in a another thread that i cant remember which one, the of center focus'ing on the 40d is also very acurate, id say its as fast on the outer dot's as the 30d is on the center point.

The more I read comments like that, the more I keep thinking I made the wrong choice in not upgrading to a 40D... but I only had my 30D from around the time the 40D came out (I got a bargain from a friend of mine who'd only bought it to cover last years MotoGP weekend). I am holding onto my cash for a 50D though, well thats my plan but it waivers a bit when I read comments like yours :D

love all the shots in here, if i can get half that quality when i go i will be one happy bunny

Awesome awesome shots...recommend the 40d for bikes then? I am looking to upgrade within 1 month and that is my body of choice I think at this stage.

The 40d in bright conditions is ace, all those posted are shot in raw, i did experiment with some of the other races that i didnt need such high quililty to test the j-peg, and s-raw features but tbh i havent yet expolored those. Hopefully tonight i'll have the rest of superbikes up, and then see about the others.

The of center focus'ing is great, but remember the outer cross type points are rated at f5.6 anything above that not sure what will happen.

Terms aof wieght no real difference if any to the 30d, noise is really well controlled some shots where taken at ISO 400 and there wasnt the slightest of noise showing which it did on the 30d.

One thing i have issue with at the mo, is the dial selection switchs although the same as the 30d, they dont all have the same functions, looking to see if i can change that in custom settings.

The other thing is with the AI, if you get focus lock on the wrong thing and take an out of focus shot the whole squence is out, wheres i found the 30d wouldnt.

No idea how she performs in bad weather, fingers crossed i wont find out as it will be nice and sunny for the rest of the season.

really nice shots (y) so clear and crisp for high speed panning.

thats it, i am going to upgrade to the 40D! and just when i had talked myself out of it to...

Excellent shots look very crisp to me, but then again what do I know :)

I'm no expert, and i think all the shots look absolutely **** hot, but I hope you don't mind me having a little tweak in photoshop to see what i could do?

I took the brightness down by 8, took the contrast up by 10, and added one click of sharpness.

Like i said, hope you don't mind, top shots :tu:

Looks a touch over sharpened to me now - look at the vertical yellow "rizla" on the side panel...

Not a problem at all mate, thats why post here, think i shall have to spend a bit of time over the weekend experimenting with some new base settings for the 40d the images are just so chrisp un-processed its unreal, but i do think they may need more.

Does any-one know if the 40d is excepted with agencies for media work? Had alot of interested parties over the last couple of weeks, that has tempted me maybe push for media access, not sure how or what is the requirements are.

I seem to remember someone telling me they were asking for 12mp these days...

You can of course use one of the fractal upscaling packages to get this... Genuine Fractals is the one I would punt for.

I see what you mean about the yellow 'rizla' writing, does look uber sharpened now.

Update on the agency photo size... apparently 50Mb uncompressed image size is what they want...

Yeah but you where using a low res 930'sh kb image.

I have a a full 13mg raw image to play with, i have applied a very limited amount of editing (sharpness etc) during the conversion to raw.

Cool thanks for that,, i sent some images to printed they where 64mb tiff files, and they look a hell of lot better then what they did on my screen, so got a couple of nice posters to go get signed next weekend :D

Is tiff execptable format.

I am quite excited tbh as i have had a few more emails today, that i have yet been unable to answer till i get home tonight. Just need to find the details to get trackside i think, if poss. Decided now its got to be worth a try, if i decide i dont like it i can turn it down at a later date.

TIFF can be a compressed format or uncompressed, that's the beauty of it.

You have to be careful with the online printing people as if you had like a 800x1200 image, they will still print it on jumbo A0 for you, but they will upscale it themselves and not all upscaling is equal... ok, that is an extreme example, but I think my point gets across!

Some techniques are rubbish, some are better (Photoshop CS3 is pretty good) but the best is achieved with specialist software, like Genuine Fractals.

PS good luck with the accreditation!

Yeah cheers for that, i have made that mistake before, CS3 is good depending on how much you need to upscale by, printed a3 without any issues, so we will see how they print larger, bit of test to, to see what sizes i could offer.

And thanks, been a great help.
