Hi all. I'm after a cheap underwater camera - for use at the beach, in the paddling pool and at the swimming baths.

It wont get used that regularly so I don't want to spend more than about £50. I have been looking on Amazon and have noticed there are 2 different types - the 'go-pro' type and the compact waterproofed type, not sure which would be better? The go-pro type has the added advantage of being able to be used on my bike (once in a blue moon).

A few I have been looking at are;

http://www.amazon.co.uk/2013-Waterp...=1406286517&sr=8-5&keywords=underwater+camera

Any input would be much appreciated!

Cock a snook at a used Olympus 850SW if you can find one, I have one and it's brilliant. 8mp, cheap as you like now and totally waterproof, plus it does video and is about the size of a fag packet so you can put it on your bike (but its a lot easier to use!)

Thanks all I will see what I can find then. good point about checking at the pool, just want to get some photos of our newborn but can see why they might not allow it.

i have just seen a Olympus 850SW going on ebay for 60 +11 postage or best offer. Any ideas on the going rate as I can't find any others going?

I'd say thats at the top end of the ballpark, I paid £160 for mine new. £50 should be about the mark.

I know its approaching double and I am not knocking the 850SW but 5+ years have seen camera tech come on in leaps and bounds so I would personally spend the extra http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Olympus-T...Cameras_DigitalCameras_JN&hash=item19eed9aec4

Having had a "waterproof" Oly cease to be, I wouldn't buy a 2nd hand one. Having had problems with their CS over it, I wouldn't buy a new one.

The Canon D10 I replaced it with has remained watertight (and supplies better files) and is easier to use wet and dry. The 1AW Nikon that I now use has the benefit of taking F mount lenses with the FT-1 adaptor which makes it very versatile (but NOT cheap!)

just shows different people demand slightly different things from there stuff... I had use of a D20 and was very underwhelmed, better for normal compact camera pics but rubbish around water.. I had the Nikon AW110 for all but a couple of hours before I sent it back, horrible to use and fogged up and took ages to clear.. whereas I love the Oly as I do all my Oly's.

would love a try of the AW1 underwater, although with the faff Simon lala had with his I don't think I would like to spend all that money and it go wrong.

After the tales of woe re the AW, I have made sure that I keep mine cool before immersion so the pressure reduction inside the camera isn't too great when it gets wet. As soon as I come out, I and the camera get a good warm shower on fresh water, followed when we get back to the room by a long soak in several changes. Every lens change (I use it with F mount lens as well) sees the o ring retreated and I open the doors as rarely as possible.

I could possibly have forgiven the Oly for failing but their cs depot was absolutely appalling so I would never deal with them again. Had it been a more expensive camera I might have taken it further but the time and effort wasn't worth it! Apparently I wasn't the only person to have that particular model fail and we all got fobbed off. Sod'em!

Interesting comments about buying second hand. Guess it could be pretty risky. Not sure which direction to take, I'm still considering one of the 'go pro' clone type cameras :-/
