External monitor for framing stills in low light?

i have a situation where I need to frame for stills with an external monitor whilst using flash so relatively low light levels. Am I right in thinking that a monitor connected via hdmi will display the LV image very dim as my exposure is set for the flash exposure? Or is it possible to boost the gain of the hdmi output or some other get around to allow realtime framing? It will be using my little D7000.
