F-Stops and Mega pixels

When I use my 50mm F1.4 on my D50 its fairly soft wide open hence I mostly use it at F2 where it’s sharp.

I put it on my D300 for the first time the other day and I noticed that the images I took at F2 looked as if they were shot with the lens wide open.

I changed to F2.8 and they were fine then – like the D50 at F2.

So my question is, does a sensor with more mega pixels push a lens to its limits causing softer images at a certain F-stop:shrug:

Thanks
Julian

I think a higher quality sensor, rather than the number of megapixels, will show up the inherent flaws in a lens design more, hence why sometimes a better body can produce worse images if your lenses aren't up to scratch

thats what sharpening is for when you reduce image size, if you reduced the file size to d50 size and applied equivalent sharpening you should get similar images
