thinking more.. (assuming you have photoshop..) it might be worth fiddling with levels (on the original) Moving the two outer sliders a little towards the middle, upping the dark and slightly upping the light. May help boost the darkness, adding punch, but retaining a good white balance

(like the hair strand!)
