There is an apple in the pond, blown off the tree by the strong winds last night, and this afternoon, the globular springtails have set about having a bit of a party on it. These springtails are 1mm or so in size, smaller than the full stop on your computer keyboard. They are the aquatic globular springtails, Collumbola Sminthuridae.

Dont know how I missed this thread... love the springy's but my word what a difference in size of them.

Those tiny tiny ones must be size of the mm line on a ruler or smaller... to my Dad's pond!

It's entirely possible that even these little beauties could even carry mites as well, but my lens like as not wouldn't show that kind of detail.

Love these. Really good to see a whole community like that.


There are so many of them on the surface of the pond. I could get a photo every day but we would soon tire of them, lol..
