So, whilst the debate continues on in THIS thread about the relative merits of great camera kit over artistic flair and interpretation, I was reminded that for the last two years we have run the disposable/one use camera challenge - the closest TP comes to kit versus photographer. Is there enough interest to run it again this year I wonder?

The idea is simple, we set some dates, probably a week in late September, you guys get yourselves one of the one use film cameras, and you take photos which you then post here for comments which by their very nature can of course only be about the actual photo and not the technical merit, simply because these cameras have sweet FA by way of technical ability - no buttons to twiddle, no LCD to check your results and no using PP on the scanned results. We usually have two threads running, one to post as many of your photos as you wish and another to post one favourite which will then go into the poll for best picture of the challenge.

Raise your hand if you are up to the challenge fancy the idea, and also if you have ideas on ways we can run it differently or make it more interesting, always happy to listen to ideas ;) I will even try and blag a small prize for the winner, the loose coins down the back of the admins sofa perhaps.

Last years thread with links to picture threads and what have you HERE

*UPDATE

As per new thread title, we are running this and your dates for actually getting your photos are:

Saturday 13th to Sunday 28th September

Yes, the light will be slightly more of a challenge than high summer, but you have 3 weekends in that time to play with too. More chance of overcast days can actually help with these cameras, they easily blow highlights when the sun is shining ;)

So, if you are joining in, start deciding where and what camera you are going to get. Plenty available on-line from places like Amazon, including under water ones etc, or go specialist with the film such as the Rollei Crossbird ones, or just pop into your local pound shop and grab a real cheapie.

Most of the high street processing shops, like snappy snaps, still offer film processing and again, there are online labs to whom you can post your finished camera for processing. Most will also scan the results to disc for you too to make it easy to put on a computer.

Finally, I can confirm there is a prize for the best photo from the challenge - only something small, cheap & cheerful, in keeping with the fun side of this challenge, but I think you will find it entirely appropriate too. Not going to say what, the winner can tell us all in due course ;)

Umm sounds interesting only suggestion maybe run it at height of summer for better lighting conditions. :)

bit late for that for this year! Anyway, consider a later date part of the challenge! :D

FWIW, we did it in august last year, I just forgot about it this year until now.

I haven't used a disposable in donkeys.... and never with the knowledge I have now so this looks like a fun idea.

Are you allowed to diffuse the inbuilt flash? Would guess no external flash allowed.

yes, you can play around with tissue paper over its flash, or coloured sweet wrappers over the lens, stuff like that, you can get all Blue Peter/Heath Robinson with it if you wish, but nothing like an external flash or anything else normally camera related.

We also trust people not to PP the scanned results, its part of the fun and this about challenging yourself to get a great photo without all that malarky, by sneaking some pp in [and yes, that includes cropping, straightening, etc] you are really just cheating yourself and this is fun competition, any prize I muster up really will not be worth 'cheating' ;)

YAY, well that's a few takers, though I realise asking on sodden wet Bank Holiday Monday might not be the best, most motivational day to choose, but hey ho. Lets see if we can rustle up some more victims volunteers and then I will add in dates and stuff to the OP. (y)

Go on then!

Pretty sure I got a twin pack for last year's so should have the second one somewhere... Sure I can find a little space in a bag to take it away tomorrow!

excellent.... so, what about if I suggest a couple of weeks, just in case you want to use 2 cameras or have another go if first one isn't what you wanted? Thinking Sunday 14th to Sunday 28th September as the time frame to actually take the pictures? We can then run the threads through October.

I'm up for this again, I'm sure I've got a disposable still knocking around from last year.

it's not worth the effort as it will only be a "p***ing contest"

but your sentiments are appreciated

Charmed I'm sure. However, it hasn't been for the last 2 years, so no reason why this year should be, but you are very welcome not to join in and have some fun.

Could the dates perhaps be extended to all of September, please? It would be nice to be able to have decent light levels!

Actually really looking forward to this... seems from last years horizon seems to be the main issue... :)

Sounds good, I've still got my spare from the first one, even further expired but never mind....

I should probably explain, last year we called it The Idiot Behind the Lens challenge and Nick was our winner, hence he has the best forum title of anyone :D

What about 2012?

Good idea... but lets stop calling them disposable cameras. Unless you throw them out then wait for the bin men to deliver your prints the following week!

Steve.

Hmmm... maybe.... what do other people think?

Yes, those of us that cannot hold a camera straight if our lives depended on it were caught out :D

What, when trying to bully admin into doing something was hard work? I think we did it better last year ;)

Steve.

Yes dear, and it was JUST for you that my opening post very deliberately said 'one use' more times than it said disposable :p

Ohhh... i've gone and bought the wrong thing... I bought one that is recyclable...!

Well packet says you won't get camera back but they will recycle... I want one that I just put in the bin.
