The more Macro images on hre the more interested I am getting into it, I find it absoutely intriguing.

I have a Canon 450 d and was wondering what was a good lens for me to start macro with and do I need anything else other than a lens? sorry new to this so thought I would ask the questions.
I thought of hiring a lens to start with to see if I liked what I took.

Any ideas? please

I have a D60 and just use a specialised Tamron 90mm Macro lens. It works fine for me. I know there are some people have have very complicated setups, but I certainly don't. what kind of macro do you want to shoot-flowers, insects etc?? There are plenty of macro lenses out there, and they range from 60mm to 200mm. The longer the focal length, the easier it is to get insects as you have a longer working distance so you don't disturb the subject.

Not really thought, flowers, insects that type of thing jsut find it amazing to look at the detail.

you can shoot flowers with a relatively short lens, eg. a 60mm macro, but to get insects, you may need to be further away from them so as not to scare them and so longer focal lengths are better. I use Tamron's 90mm Macro lens and I find it very sharp, and it isn't too expensive. I think Sigma do a very good 180mm f3.5, but it's £500.

The sigma 105mm & Cannon 100mm macros are both excellent lens, but to get the most out of them you'll need a flash - A diffused speed light will work ok with both of the these lens.

Uh Oh !!!!!!!!!!! someone told me this was going to be an expensive hobby good job I sold the ponies before taking it up!!!

The idea of flowers and insects suit but going to have to save up or look second hand with this safari trip looming!

Will keep looking on the for sale forum but I never seem to be lucky on there!

in a recent photography magazine's article, they tested the sigma 105, canon 100, tamron 90, sony 100, pentax 100 and nikon 105 vr, an dit emerged that the tamron was the sharpest and the best value for money.

Thank you guys will be looking out for a cheapish Tamron 90 then!
