Herring Gulls

Hi,
I managed to get out into the garden this afternoon and had a look to see what I could capture. A number of herring gulls were circling, so I thought I would practice my BIF technique. So often I go to take a picture of a bird in flight, and cant even find it in the viewfinder, never mind take a decent shot! :bang::bonk:
Anyway, I managed to get a number of shots, but some have a white blurry halo around them. I tried different combinations of metering and WB but still not sure I am happy. Please let me know what I am doing wrong.

1 and 3 I like best, very hard to shoot birds like this though as you are fighting against bright light and deep shadow under the wing, so I think youve done well there. have you cropped them much?

Not huge crops, for example the first was probably half the original landscape frame which then became portrait, leaving more space in front of the bird, rather than behind.
