Both are wonderful shots.

Its a female carrying eggs and in the second pic, you can just see the outline of them :) - nice shot getting that kind of detail in there.

Cheers les,it does work better with the flash. Is it worth getting a ring flash,will it improve the images.
Using a sb400 at the moment.
 
I use both types of flash Off camera and A RING FLASH

I prefer the off camera as I can position it to light from above below or either side - depending on the direction of natural light

so, my advice get a hot shoe lead say around 6ft and try shooting off camera

I have a mount that allows me to do this- or I use a tripod for the Camera and position the flash by hand, as it has a foot to stand on
