I don't do weddings - however...

I was a guest at the civil wedding of my niece (I think she is - I lose track of the relatives...) who married her partner on Friday.

I don't do people - especially weddings! They did of course have a professional wedding photographer there to record the whole event but I took my camera and did a few myself. Small selection below...

Camera was set to mostly f2/8 due to the indoor setting of Bartle Hall where the event took place, with the ISO set to AUTO (which gave some pretty high ISO images, which did OK, but I did use some NR afterwards) and in silent shutter mode. Some where fired "off the cuff - without looking at the screen and pointing the lens in (Hopefully) the right place and some where of course framed as required.

The pro wedding photographer had control of the the angles, I was just sat in the seats during the service. All in all, quite pleased with the results...

Nice, how did you ensure you were not in the pros way, I always consider taking a “proper” camera to weddings but dont want to be that guy

I think the first 5 shots maybe need a degree of clockwise rotation.

I wouldn't worry too much about high ISO's as presumably this was to keep the shutter speed reasonable so the choice is some noise or motion blur.

Hope all enjoyed the day and here hoping for a long and happy life together :D

Same for me. I haven't been to a wedding for a loooong time but I refused to take a BIG camera to the last I went to.

I covered a good friend’s wedding some years ago, they had a pro but I hung around on the sidelines getting candid shots.
The pro wasn’t very happy with me being there and gave me some nasty glances and kept muttering to himself whenever I was nearby.

I just blanked him, took my 250+ images including flash! I even managed to get in a couple of his for good measure :)

Nice set by the way ;)

Lovely photos :D

I was asked to do a friends wedding a few years back but turned down the opportunity, I wasn't prepared to take on the responsibility of the big day, let the pros do that lol

I was sat 3 or 4 rows back - the 'tog was able to move around the room, so all mine in the service where taken with the camera resting on my knee with my hands covering my eqipment! ;)

I'm thinking the same Steve - way too much pressure and hassle doin it as the main man!

I've always said I'd never do a wedding shoot for the following reasons:
  1. Don't want the responsibility
  2. I'm just not that good
  3. If it's a family affair I won't get to spend any time with the good lady wife.
That said, I let myself get cajoled into doing my niece's wedding about 5 years ago. Although my wife said I looked really professional going about my business, it was the worst I've ever felt taking pictures. The bride was over the moon with the photos I'd taken and there were lots of complimentary comments from family members. So it wasn't the cock-up I feared it would be.
Since then, I've had numerous family members just expecting Uncle Richard would do their wedding too. I've robustly refused.
I now leave my "proper camera" at home. Mainly because my elderly mother would grab me and start instructing me to "take one of him/her/them" or she'd drag them over to me to take a shot.

I know exactly where you're coming from Richard - it's not something I would be cajoled into as the one responsible for being sure all the shots are done for all the parties! The candid sneaky ones do me just fine :)

You weren't getting in the photographers photos, you were getting in the couples photos. There's a bit of a difference.
