i really like the idea of 'tightly bunched'. It doesnt seem to work, though. I'm guessing you've cropped a small area of the shot and blown it up degrading the image quality. If the quality had been better then that would be a brilliant shot indeed!

I really like the sort of shot you have in #2. The way the bikes and riders have a nice pattern to them through the chicane.

I think your heavily cropped shot would still work quite well if you cropped out the marshall post and also some of the grass at the bottom - keeping it in 6x4 ratio.

You'll have a much better result with a larger version, but this is where I was going with the composition...

May be worth chopping a bit more dead space off the left side?
