Yes
I recently approached Derby County Ladies FC to hopefully improve the standard of photography on their website and to give me some experience of photographing sports. The men's team's websites I've looked at seem to either have a non-amateur photo policy or already have decent photographers covering them, so I thought this would be a good teething ground for me.
So far I've covered two games, which luckily for me were mostly in bright sunshine so I got a good shutter speed from my entry level Canon and 75-250 kit lens, the one thing I struggled with was blurring out the distracting background typical of a local football ground.

Good effort considering the kit you have

To blur BG you'll need a faster telephoto lens ( one with a wider maximum aperture that the kit lens, say f2.8 or f4) and these are not cheap, although do the job perfectly plus the wider aperture will give you a much faster shutter speed to help keep the images sharp too

I have a Sigma 70-200 f2.8 that's a lens that would achieve what your after, in regards to blurred BG's

Les ;)

You should number the pics as you post otherwise difficult to point to which ones we are tlaking about :)

You should bin the last picture as no ball in it..no matter how good you think the action is.. some pics work without a ball.. this deffo doesnt..

I would also bin the third one.. no use backs of players

You should be looking to have more faces than bums in a picture..... ball in picture and dont crop too tight.. tight crops look good..but not right up to head or feet

otherwise not a bad job considering the lens isnt really reccomended for this type of stuff :)

I put in those two on purpose mainly to give a bit of variety, out of the 100+ shots of the two games, there are probably 80 odd (guesstimate) shots of players with the ball and 6 goal celebration, but I get your point that while those two are interesting to me they wouldn't be interesting to the players or from a reportage POV.

not completely wasting my time then :)
