I'm in no position to give pointers as I have never tried this kind of portrait but that doesn't stop me making a suggestion:)

Maybe it could have still been low key but a stronger set of images if there had been some form of gentle back light which just, and only just, gave an edge of light down the back of the heads/ on the opposite side to the main light?

I didn't think of that and it sounds like a great idea. I'll give it a go next time around. Thanks Chris.
