I decided to venture over to the Lakes for the first time in my life to catch the rally on Saturday. A really beautiful part of the world, yet I didn't take a single Landscape photo while I was there.
A great rally, with a lot of top entries, but a bit lacking in the Historics. Unfortunately I didn't get to see either Hugh Hunter in his Focus, or Malcolm Wilson in the Fiesta S2400 he was driving, as both retired before getting to Grizedale.
Still a great day, and tried to go easy on the tilting of my shots for once!

Thanks for looking!

A great set of shots. Good to see the cars set in spectacular scenery. Also like the backlighting on the dust in #2. The last two look a little dark to me but that may be my monitor.

Just my type of stuff ,great ,imaginative compositions ,Matty, nicely shot.

Thank goodness you used the stunning backdrops .

And my neck doesn't ache either:)

Great set !

Excellent set I really like them all,but No 3 is my favourite.
I'm probably in a minority thinking this, but I much prefer rally shots taken with a scenic perspective - rather than tightly cropped like many are.

Very nice indeed Matt, some lovely angles and composition really showing off the scenery.

My only small gripe is that 1, 4 & 5 look a little under-exposed on my monitor.

Love those especially 3 and 4 very different from most rally photos you see.

Cheers all, glad these are meeting with some approval. I specifically tried to avoid the tilt, following comments on my last set from the Riponian Stages. Also, I think that taking a more landscape approach was a good move, I still came away with the usual closer shots of cars, but went out with my mind set on getting some more scenic shots. Going on the feedback, this was a good idea.
The only trouble I think is the lack of action they convey, as I couldn't pan, as I would lose the clarity of the backgrounds. A dusty day would help this though. I think a lot of it is about selecting the right spot to shoot from. If anyone has any ideas on how to find out more stage information I would be more than grateful, as I just end up walking as much of the stage as I can to try and find a good shot. I want water splashes, jumps and dust. How do I find these?????? There seems so little info on the net about this.

Many thanks for the comments so far guys! Appreciated

I wouldn't go as far as preferring them, but like you I do like the scenic perspective. They often tell a story, putting the action into perspective. 5 & 6 do it quite well, although for me the scenery takes the eye away from the car in No 3. Or you could say it really puts rallying into perspective against the majesty of nature :)

Love No3 very much.......well I would say that wouldnt I as I sponsor Sion Matthews in his Mk2 .....

Seriously though cracking shot totally different to what is usually on here

Im reluctant to put any of mine up now, cos these are superb, I'm sure after your first visit to the Lakes you'll be back...........

Thanks all for your feedback. It was a great rally to spectate, even though there were a number of retirements before the stages I made it to.
I will go back and check the ones flagged as underexposed. I upped the contrast in a couple of those so have probably been a bit heavy handed.
Will definitely be making a trip back to the lakes. MUST take some landscape shots over there next time too.

I'm sure if you offered me a grand or two, I could email you the file haha :D

Hi, I like all your images, but number 3 caught my eye straight away.
To me it shows that it's almost in a little world of it's own, shielded by the trees, like a picture post card. Well done.

Really like these.
Not your typical rally shots, but some interestingly composed shots showing the cars and backdrops together.
First rate stuff and makes me want to stand by a muddy track on a freezing cold day haha!

Jeez, thanks for all the kind words. Got to say, it's much easier to take a good photo in the lakes it seems. Definitely going to try and persevere with this style of rally shot, as I am going to hopefully attend a lot more in the coming year. Definitely worth standing out in the cold on a winters day for!!

As I built and prepare the Escort in picture No. 6, I can tell you that your picture has gone down a bomb with Simon and the team!
Brilliant shot!

Salut!

Thanks all for your kind words. It really is appreciated, and I'm glad that people are feeling some of these shots. Can't wait for the next rally now..... I have half a mind to hammer down to Epynt this weekend! But I think the Borders rally will be more realistic.

Very nice set, its nice to see something a bit different, No3 & 4 stand out for me.

Great use of the scenery. As others have said #3 jumped out to me. Great shot. Works especially well as no spectators or red tape to "spoil" the scenery, lovely stuff.

One rally I wanted to get to this year, sadly ended up at home building a greenhouse.

A great set of photos far better than the normal close in cropped action shots which can become a little repetitive. What you lose in movement you gain in overall view, so from my point of view I really liked the composition.

Regarding information / maps, have a look on some of the rally forums maps are sometimes available to help plan your day out.

@hoochy1 - thanks for the info - that Targa Bealach Na ba looks really interesting, and definitely looks a good place for epic views. I'm ashamed to say I've not been to Scotland the once when I was a kid, but now I've moved up to North Yorkshire, there's not a lot of excuse left. cheers again
