I borrowed a lens from a colleague at work, I took it out for the first time this morning and it had no auto focus at all, I know he bought it new and has rarely used it, so probably it was fine when he gave it to me and its not worth the hassle to question if it was working, so I am looking for a way to get it fixed. I have recently moved to Devon and I am looking for a lens repair service, can anyone help.

Will never borrow or lend a lens again:bonk:

What's wrong with asking if it was working? He may say no and then you won't have to have it repaired. The AF switch might be dodgy (or in the wrong postion).

Got to ask... Have you done a very thorough check of all the settings first?

:agree: as in checked to see if it is switched to auto focus on the lens

could also give the pins a quick clean on body & lens, tape head cleaner (isopropynol), and as said give all the switches a bit of a flick.

On your lens, there is an AF/M switch. If this switch is in the "M" position autofocus won't work. Switch it to "AF" if that's the case and try it again.

Apologies if you know this already, but it's not clear from your post that this is not the reason why it doesn't work.

On another note, if you do find that the lens is faulty, speak to your colleague first and get him to try it back on his own camera.

It may be that there is an issue with your camera rather than his lens.

Also, if you haven't dropped or mistreated the lens I don't think you should de facto assume the responsibility of the repair if one is needed. He may have dropped it himself before he handed it over to you! Again before you do anything speak to your colleague.

I tried flicking the switches, cleaning the pins, I tried it on my spare body, I even tried standing on one leg and barking at it... definately faulty. I will check with my colleague if it is under guarantee still, but I think I will need to find a repair shop

Good idea ! OR he will get it back and say "Thats strange the AF wasn't working when I lent it to you!"

Ha ha ha. This is why we test every single function on every lens, every time we send it to a customer. We know it's 100% working when it leaves our place, so if it's not 100% functional we know it's the customer's fault. It would drive us mad if we had to cope with situations like this every day.
