Olympus OM-D E-M10

currently with my d7000 i have a 35mm f1.8 ( hardly ever used unless its low light ), a 17-50VC f2.8 ( which is almost always used ), and a 70-300VR.

I'm trying to weigh up the costs of an "equivalent" range but am a little lost with the lenses, what fits what etc. Can anyone steer me in the right direction please ?

12-40 f2.8
75-300

If you wanted a fast prime then the Olympus 25mm f1.8 would be similar to your 35 now. Don't forget that the 45mm f1.8 is probably the best value prime lens with awesome quality and 90mm is a beautiful portrait length.

I used my 35mm f1.8 last night for the shot of Lily and really enjoyed using it. It is so much lighter than the 17-50 vc and alot quicker to focus.

35mm 1.8 = Olympus 25mm 1.8 (£300)
17-50 2.8 = Panny 12 - 35 2.8 or Oly 12 - 40 2.8 (£550-700)
70-300 VR = Panny 45 - 200 F4-5.6 (£150)

thanks both

EM10 = £500
25mm 1.8 = £300
45mm 1.8 = £200
12-40 2.8 = £769 !
45-200 = £237 ?
75-300 = £390

above are UK prices :( The 17-50 "equivalent" is hellishly priced !

Indeed....the 45-200 MFT would actually allow more reach as well being equivalent to 400mm. As a (slightly lesser) alternative, there is the Olympus 40-150mm f4-5.6 (effectively 80-300mm) for around £110.

But as ever Damian you would just have to buy them as and when you can. Figure out which lenses are a priority and get them first. Then add the others when you have the cash. I know that's hard and I especially want everything yesterday so it's a bit rich coming from me but unless you have the cash to add to what you will get for your nikon kit it's the only way.

MFT have great lenses and IQ is genrally superb but they come at a cost especially if buying new. The Sigma f2.8's offer both excellent IQ and great value being £130 each.

are the kit lenses ( 14-42 and 40-150 ) no good ?

As someone who has owned Canon and Pentax digital SLR's I'd say they are better than the oppositions kit lenses.

I could post a few examples taken with both those lenses but I'd think everyone is getting fed up of me posting pics here. ;)

I have been impressed with the little I have used the 40-150mm R, I always bow to pressure in thinking I NEED a long zoom but never do :( ne'er mind.. I have just ordered the 12-50, gets some less than favorable reviews but you have to see through them, yes the RRP might have suggested it should be optically and faster than what it is but an all rounder weather sealed short zoom perfect for video, stills and with a what looks like okay macro, for the current used prices around £130 cannot be bad IMO

Actually taking the 1.6 crop factor of the Canon into account the nearest lens to the is the EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM at £699 . ;)

Eh? He's looking to switch from Nikon to M43, why would he be looking to buy a Canon DSLR lens? Do you know of any other F2.8 fast standard zooms for M43?

As someone who has owned Canon, Nikon, Sony and pretty much every camera besides a Pentax, I will disagree, and so will DXO. Like I said, very similar.

Twist you are entitled to disagree.:)
I have never shot Nikon just Canon and Pentax and owned the kit lenses at sometime so I cannot comment or am qualified to comment on Nikon kit lenses but there is not a lot in it off those marks and I only know and go off how lenses perform in the real world and not a test bench, but that's me.;)

I agree tend to agree, certain lenses do offer a 'look' you can't see in the numbers but they are useful sometimes, Sigmas primes for example.

Ahh just noticed I misread and cocked up on that one, no brand name just D7000 mentioned...sorry one of those senility moments made me think Canon. :$

I'm contemplating getting the 60mm macro however have just been reading up on the Kenko MFT extension rings....does anyone have any experience with either the lens or the extension rings on an OM-D?

Happy today as my E-M10 body has arrived....camera strap, grip & lens attached, firmware updated....ready to rock!

Not really. I guess I'm looking at £1000+ and selling my Nikon stuff would get about £800-£900.

Need to get to a camera shop first

No idea. If I got a 25 1.8, I think I'd miss the wide end. And there's no way I can run to £750+ for a lens as this is just a hobby..

I do like Paul's shots with his 75mm but I like macro so maybe a 60mm 2.8 is an option for me. And the 75-300 appeals too..

It's the price difference on the wider quick lenses that's a killer

Equivalent to the tamron ideally..

I know, I know = mega bucks
