Welcome Tom, I see your a newbie here.
So 1st off I will say hi to ya.
So back to this dawgy, If shooting animals always try and shoot them in a open space or at least a place that does not have leaves that cover them in part,
1st pic has that horrible brown leaf covering the dogs back/side, and the tail is in a shaded part.
2nd pic, again that leaf is in the way, looks like its coming out of the dogs mouth and th feet have also been lost in the foilage..
Fantastic animals those springers, they always look interested in whats happening (1st pic) love that face.
Try get that expression but in a clear spot, you need better composition .
Hope that helps and maybe someone with more experience will give you more info/critique
 
I would disagree with Graham.
That looks like it could be a great location if you use the leaves to frame the dogs face.
You don't want them covering the eyes or part of the mouth but it doesn't bother me that part of the dog's body is covered or you can't see the feet.
I'd also get closer to the dog or crop in tighter.
