Jumping straight in with a photo is a daunting task ...
Depth of field looks nice
Not sure if you have sharpened this .... It could do with a bit more.
The background is a bit distracting ... Try taking the shot from the dogs eye level against a plain background.
A portrait crop may work better with this type of pose.
Keep taking shots of your dog ... Looks like you have a very willing model ...

thanks hypnotic as i say im just learning im 23 and decided i wanted something special (camera wise) and took the plunge with a canon eos 10d, sigma 17-35mm and a sigma 28-200mm lenses and as for my dog she is a star loves posing for the camera
