Agree.

OP, to avoid haloing don't push the local contrast so much. If I was taking this shot though personally I would have exposure bracketed to give me brighter exposures and luminance masked in PS, it is the only way to do it cleanly with no grad lines, no halos and no horrid HDR artefacts.
