As this is a light weight camcorder (circa 1kg), any tripod / pan head would easily carry the weight, but for convenience / less movement when starting or stopping recording, it is better to obtain the genuine Sony tripod with an integral Remote Control (plugs into the acc socket) built into the pan head control to both start/ stop recording plus they also have a zoom control - this makes for a much more professionnal recording.
I have a Sony VCT-670RM tripod for my camcorder, but I have not used it for a little while as the last time I used the camcorder I placed it on a monopod, which worked well for a wedding I was shooting.
