Yes
im really wanting to take a few pics underwater for a project I have in mind but need thoughts. I want a few pics underwater of my dogs but don't have an underwater housing and they can cost £1000, which I stupid money seeing as I only want to use it a couple of times. What I need is a waterproof camera to allow up to maybe 2meters in depth but can be controlled (most settings) from say an iPad. It would need to have good quality images and be able to print a3 sizes so maybe 12megapixels or above. So what are my options?

Any experience of the GOPRo image quality? I know nothing about them. Can they be controlled by the ipad/iphone as i cant hold my breath to long under water.lol

The gorpro image quality is real good in easy conditions, falls away a little as light gets tougher, but for what it is no complaints. You can control using the app in water, but the range is limited. Also of note the go pro remote is rated to 2m depth, but I've never tried it

I suspect the GoPro is going to give a fairly wide angle view. How about something like the Lumix FT series, or Olympus/Fuji equivalents. Image quality is going to be more limited by the water and available light rather than the camera. I've also seen articles where photographers have used a fish tank in the shallows of a lake or stream and a DSLR fitted with a rubber lens hood placed up to the glass, obviously with a degree of care.

I use an Lumix FT1 when I'm motorcycling and can vouch for for weather sealing.

personally I love my GoPro, used it loads underwater, image quality is crystal clear under nice lighting, only falls off in harsh conditions.

Overall superb, i use the phone app to remotely use mine and its awesome peice of kit.

the go pro 4 will be your favourite for 12mp and fast fps, I beleive its 5 or something.

I have the hero 3 silver, love it

Heres a random shot from it bearing in mind it was shot through dirty double glazing its not all too bad, unfortunately I have only shot video underwater and no still images.

Has anyone had much luck controlling their gopro from their phone/tablet (all makes available [emoji12]) whilst the camera is underwater (obv the phone/tablet not in the water!!) as I found the water blocks the wifi signal fairly quickly.

to be honest though they are not that much for what they are.

The hero 4 black will set you back around £340-£380 or there abouts, 4k video, 12mp stills... basically what you want

I control mine all the time via the phone app, works a treat although I couldnt tell you on the distance underwater that mine cuts out at, I have use it at over 5 meters in normal conditions fine.

Will have to have another go with mine. Was ages ago I tried it, and think it was an older model.

I know a bit about hiring, and I have looked specifically at whether I might hire out underwater gear, so hopefully I can help here....

My take on it is that you have to be totally anal about keeping the seals clean. One bit of grit in there and you can ruin your camera. So you as the user need to be very fussy, and you need the hire company to be very fussy. I don't think it would be prudent to hire underwater gear from a company that isn't a specialist in underwater gear. I certainly wouldn't. (And I don't hire out underwater gear for the same reasons.)

On that short list there's only one company which is a specialist.

theres the nikon natica? underwater system, great western camera's had one and a 15mm lens. ive no idea as to its condition or price. they also have a dive case and camera for some point and shoot
