Yeh, I think maybe it shows off the shadow and relief better.
 
Mono here too but I think you can do a more with the conversion to give it a bit more oomph.
 
Mono for me too, but yep, it's a bit grey and drab looking. The ideal black and white shot has a good black, a good white and as full a range of tones in between as possible - assuming they're there in the subject obviously. You have the black in your shot, but not the white, although you can get close to it with a bit of curves and contrast adjustment to give a bit more pizzaz. :)

B&W looks best to me, the only way the col version would look better is if the sun was setting on it and it made the sandstone all golden. :)
 
I'll concede that as there is not much colour in the original and stone is about texture it may as well be in mono :)

You can still add contrast and sharpen the colour version though....
