not sure how rare it is but i had never seen one. i know image could be sharper. maybe bird experts will tell more

Like the composition. And good exposure, oldfart. But some levels work and USM could make it 'pop' a bit more, imo.

seen a blackbird with a pure white head this evening but couldnt stop to get piccy!
 
I think Janice is right, if it was a mallard it would be a leucistic bird, i have seen starlings and blackbirds with this pigmentation. All black pigmentation is known as melanistic, often seen in pheasants.
