i think that we need to see more of the boats and therfor the context in which they are set, some space in front of them would give a sense of having somewere to go

Yeap, more of the ships visible to the image.
Also, would be nice to see the faces of the sailors to give the image some 'emotion'.

I do like the blue/red contrast - which I believe is something you aimed to show in the image?
