Nice shots Dave! I do believe im on the shot somewhere... onstage somewhere in the fireworks enclosure. The fireworks dont look anywhere near as good as they do on your pics. The park is actually on a hill so the shots will look slightly out.
I have a similar dilema at the moment - not happy with the 18-55 IS kit lens and have a 70-300 Sigma but need something a little shorter for walkabout and the Sigma 17-70 looks favourite for the money - but very little seems to be said about them.
Another vote here for the 430EXII ... superb bit of kit!
As for batteries... I use these - http://cpc.farnell.com/BT00075 very cheap for a multipack of 40 and last easily as long per cell as Duracell.
Hope I dont break the rules here - but the place I work is probably the cheapest for HDMI cables .... here are two 1m versions
Nickel or Gold plated connectors?
Mic stands are available with either 5/8" or 3/8" thread (or both using thread adaptors) ... sadly being a newbie im not sure what thread the flash stands have.
I got my cashback a few days back yet I bought the camera back in November  still it gave me an excuse for the newest addition - a Sigma 70-300 APO lens ... a bargain at £127.22 from Jessops. Roll on weekend then I can go for a wander with the camera :D
Here is one taken back in August... as with the recently posted sunset pics this was taken with a borrowed EOS400D before I splashed out on my 450D :)
The snap is a friends daughter showing her mother a baby crab - didnt manage to get the crab in shot but did end up with this... C&C welcome...
OK, here goes... be gentle with me guys as im a complete newbie! Here are a few shots I took in August with an EOS400D borrowed from a friend (just before deciding to buy my own camera). The shots are mainly point & shoot and untouched.

Large versions can be...
Another 450D user (newbie) here... only got the 18-55mm IS lens at the moment. The camera is ace - its my first DSLR and so far I have not worked out how to use any of the settings other that auto so I have some learning to do.
