It came with a large flight case which is very good for protection from knocks but it isn't very practical if you have to carry it away from the car. Bird hides often involve a hike to get there. Also with a big enough bag the lens can be attached to the camera ready to go.

The Nikon 200-500mm is a cracking lens, very sharp and good enough to take a 1.4x teleconverter that should AF on your D7200. The only possible negative is that AF could be a bit quicker, especially with the TC. I also use the 300mm F4 PF which will AF with the 1.7x TC and give 510mm at F6.7...
